Wildfire erupts near Kelowna airport: Tactical evacuations ordered, flights suspended amid firefighting efforts - video
Wildfire near Kelowna airport (Castanet.news)

A fast-moving wildfire that broke out behind Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia on Sunday prompted tactical evacuations, grounded dozens of flights, and led to a temporary closure of airport airspace, local authorities confirmed. The blaze ignited in the Ellison area, just north of the airport, and quickly spread due to dry conditions. The British Columbia wildfire service deployed air tankers, helicopters, and ground crews, while local fire departments joined the containment efforts. The wildfire named Whelan Creek is now being held. The BC Wildfire Service now estimates the fire to be 4.31 hectares in size.“We have three initial attack crews, two single resources, two helicopters bucketing and we did have four air tankers on site as well, but they have completed their objectives and have grounded,” said fire information officer Cali Nessman.Nessman stated that a unit crew of around 20 personnel was expected to arrive by Sunday evening. The BC Wildfire Service is supporting the Ellison Fire Department, which remains the lead agency.Firefighters from the Kelowna, Lake Country, Joe Rich, North Westside, and Wilson’s Landing departments also responded to the wildfire on Sunday afternoon.“The fire is currently burning at Rank 2 to 3, which indicates a surface fire with occasional candling and a slow to moderate rate of spread,” Nessman explained. As flames approached residential zones, the Kelowna RCMP conducted tactical, door-to-door evacuations in several areas, including Rockface Road, Upper Booth Road, and Dead Pine Road. Around 10 evacuees registered at the Beasley community centre in nearby Lake Country.Due to the proximity of the fire, Kelowna International Airport suspended operations, with airspace closed to allow firefighting aircraft unrestricted access. More than 25 commercial flights were cancelled or delayed.Residents were urged to stay out of the affected zones and follow emergency instructions. Police and emergency responders maintained a heavy presence to ensure safety and enforce evacuation orders. The cause of the wildfire was under investigation at the time of reporting. Officials noted that while no major injuries had been reported, the situation remained dynamic and subject to change based on weather conditions.Passengers were advised to check with airlines and monitor official airport channels for updates. Authorities said further information on containment progress and any additional evacuation orders would be shared in upcoming briefings.
