Amid a political ruckus in poll-bound West Bengal following raids by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) at the office of the I-PAC (Indian Political Action Committee), state governor CV Ananda Bose has received a threat email, which read: “Will blast him”, as reported by news agency ANI.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose received a threatening email stating, ‘Will Blast Him’. The Governor’s security has been increased. Meanwhile, the governor’s security has been heightened, and the matter has been briefed to the Union Home Ministry. A midnight conclave of the security forces in charge of the Governor’s security was also held, said the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Governor, as quoted by the agency.

The incident follows raids by the ED at the Kolkata-based residence of Pratik Jain, the co-founder and director of the I-PAC, which is engaged in political consultancy for West Bengal ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Raids were also conducted on Thursday, January 8, at the office of the I-PAC in Kolkata. According to the probe agency, the raids were in connection with a money laundering case linked to coal mining.

‘Politically motivated, unconstitutional’

Amid the raids in the poll-bound state’s capital, high-voltage drama unfolded with Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee terming them as “politically motivated and unconstitutional”.

“They have raided the residence of our IT chief. They were confiscating my party’s documents and hard disks, which has details about our candidates for the assembly polls. I have brought those back,” news agency PTI quoted Mamata Banerjee as saying.

She alleged that the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state is “taking away all her party’s documents”. “Is it the duty of Home Minister Amit Shah and the ED to take away all my party documents? If I go to the BJP party office, what will be the result? Under the SIR, 5 lakh names have been deleted. Just because there is an election, they are taking away all my party’s documents,” Banerjee said.

During the raids, she also “rushed” to Pratik Jain’s residence, claiming that the probe agency was attempting to “loot” her party’s hard disks as well as internal documents and sensitive data.

BJP attacks Mamata

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari called CM  Mamata Banerjee’s visit to I-PAC chief Pratik Jain’s house during the ED raid “unconstitutional and interference” in the central agency’s investigation.

He demanded that the ED take action against the Chief Minister.

“I feel that the chief minister and the Kolkata police commissioner’s visit was unethical, unconstitutional and direct interference in the central agency’s investigation,” Adhikari told reporters.

What ED said

Later in the day, the Directorate of Enforcement released an official statement, emphasising that the raids were “evidence-based”, “not targeted at any political establishment”.

“The search is ongoing at 10 places – six in West Bengal and four in Delhi”, the ED said, according to a statement shared by ANI.
