Suspended BRS MLC K Kavitha on Monday resigned from her seat in the Telangana Legislative Council and announced plans to launch a new political party, saying the state needs an independent alternative.

Speaking to the media, the Telangana Jagruthi founder said she had submitted her resignation on the floor of the Council. “I have tendered my resignation once again on the floor of the state legislative council. I hope the chairman will accept my resignation,” she said.

Kavitha said her suspension from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) was handled in an “insulting manner” and left her deeply hurt. She accused both the opposition BRS and the ruling Congress of failing the people of Telangana.

“The BRS has failed to fulfil Telangana people’s aspirations, and the Congress is doing the same thing,” she said.

Stressing the need for a fresh political force, Kavitha said the state required an independent party. “This state needs an independent political party. We will form a political party very soon. We will fight and work for the rights of the people of Telangana,” she added.

Kavitha was suspended from the BRS in September last year after she accused party leaders and her cousins, Harish Rao and J Santosh Kumar, of damaging the image of her father and former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao. The dispute was linked to allegations surrounding the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project built during the BRS government.

Since her suspension, Kavitha has remained active in public life through Telangana Jagruthi, a cultural organisation she leads. Under its banner, she has raised several social and political issues across the state.

Earlier, on December 12, Kavitha accused both the BRS and the Congress of corruption and irregularities. She said she aimed to become chief minister one day and promised to order probes into what she described as injustices committed since the formation of Telangana in 2014.
