Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Sunday said that he is in talks with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Asaduddin Owaisi for a potential alliance ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.

The Bharatpur (West Bengal) MLA, who stoked a controversy by laying the foundation stone for a mosque modelled on Ayodhya’s Babri Masjid in Murshidabad’s Rejinagar, said the proposed tie-up aims to stop both the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal.

“I spoke to Owaisi last night, and we had a discussion and decided that we will stand by the poor Muslims in this state. The public is saying that Bengal Owaisi is me, and he is Hyderabad Owaisi; both brothers will unite and fight against the TMC and the BJP. I have been invited to Hyderabad and I will go when I get time,’ he said as quoted by media reports.

Earlier, Kabir had vowed to form a new party, saying that he will field candidates on 135 Assembly seats in the upcoming polls.

“I will not resign as MLA because the people of Bharatpur are asking me not to. I will announce a new party on December 22 and will field candidates on 135 Assembly seats (in West Bengal polls). I will fight against both the BJP and them (TMC). They can do whatever they want,” he said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Kabir was suspended from the TMC earlier this week over the controversial project. Explaining the rationale behind the move, senior party minister Firhad Hakim said the TMC stands for secular politics and Kabir’s move was not in line with the party’s position.

On Saturday, the suspended legislator proceeded with the mosque inauguration ceremony amid a swelling crowd and clerics sharing the dais and slogans of “Nara-e-Takbeer, Allahu Akbar”, saying the project was not meant to oppose the Ram Mandir and that Muslims had every right to build a mosque in Bengal.

Over the past year, Kabir has repeatedly criticised the TMC, prompting warnings from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee that such behaviour would not be tolerated. He has clashed with party leaders, including Baharampur MP Yusuf Pathan, and the TMC has issued him multiple show-cause notices.

Kabir was also censured by the party leadership a number of times and even slapped with show-cause notices for making public statements that caused embarrassment to the party.
