The Internal Revenue Service, which collects taxes, may come under the chopping board as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s Department of Government Efficiency starts functioning as Americans on X polled in favour of deleting the department. To cut government expenses, DOGE will be shutting down agencies, fire employees and the audit has apparently started on X. Elon Musk Wednesday conducted a poll asking if the Internal Revenue Service should be deleted. The poll came after the department sought $20 billion more money.
“The IRS just said it wants $20B more money. Do you think its budget should be: Increased, Same, Decreased, Deleted,” Musk asked in the poll. And more than 60 per cent of users polled in favor of deleting its budget. Only 3.9 per cent said the federal agency’s budget should remain the same, 5. 6 per cent felt it deserved more money and 29.9 per cent said the IRS budget should be decreased.
“Well, the public has made their view clear…” Elon Musk posted.
Elon Musk’s poll followed treasury department deputy secretary Wally Adeyemo’s public plea for billions dollars in more funding for the IRS. “The IRS is going to potentially have to make dramatic decisions about stopping hiring and starting to budget for a world in which they don’t have $20 billion, which will stop a lot of their progress,” Adeyemo said in a press conference. ”If they don’t get that $20 billion that is at risk they would run out of enforcement money at the current pace sometime in fiscal year 2025,” he added.
Adeyemo urged Congress to unlock the $20 billion in funds for the IRS in the upcoming budget and said that without the money some $140 billion would be added to the national deficit, by way of thousands of fewer audits for the wealthy and large corporations.
X users who do not support the idea of deleting the IRS said abolishing the department will only help Elon Musk and “his billionaire buddies” to evade tax.
In the Joe Rogan interview, Donald Trump hinted that he would think about getting rid of income tax and replace it with a tariff.
