‘Words have consequences’: Indiana senator to vote against Trump over slur; cites daughter’s Down Syndrome

A Republican senator from Indiana has said he will vote against the state’s redistricting plan after Donald Trump used an insulting term for people with intellectual disabilities on social media.Senator Michael Bohacek made the announcement on Facebook, saying he received many questions about his position. Bohacek wrote that he has been “an unapologetic advocate for people with intellectual disabilities” since the birth of his second daughter. “Those of you who don’t know my family or me might not know that my daughter has Down Syndrome,” he said. “This is not the first time the president has used these insulting and derogatory references and his choice of words have consequences,” Bohacek added. He said he will vote no on redistricting and suggested that Trump could use the next ten months to convince voters that his behaviour and policies deserve a congressional majority.

His comments came after Trump used the word to describe Minnesota governor Tim Walz in a post on Truth Social. Trump claimed that Somali immigrants were “taking over” Minnesota and criticised Walz for not acting. “Somalian gangs are roving the streets looking for “prey” as our wonderful people stay locked in their apartments and houses hoping against hope that they will be left alone. The seriously retarded governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, does nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both, while the worst,” Trump had written on Truth Social.Walz, 61, responded with a jab of his own, posting on X, “Release the MRI results,” referring to the MRI Trump reportedly had during a visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in October.Meanwhile, Indiana lawmakers are preparing to meet again in December to make a final decision on redistricting after the Senate said it did not have enough support to pass the new map. Republicans argue that redrawing the map could turn the state’s two Democratic House seats into Republican wins.
