In a strategic move, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has reached out to PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, describing their relationship as one of “like-minded senior leaders” who consult weekly on the state’s political roadmap. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shivakumar addressed the ongoing leadership tussle within the Congress party, emphasising that both he and Jarkiholi, frequently associated with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s camp, are working in tandem to ensure the government’s return to power. The political atmosphere in Karnataka remains charged following remarks by Minister HC Mahadevappa regarding the possibility of a Dalit Chief Minister. Shivakumar suggested that Mahadevappa, being a senior leader with ties to the high command, might possess information regarding a leadership change that he himself has not yet received.
While dismissing rumours of an immediate summons to Delhi, the Deputy CM clarified that his upcoming visit to the capital is strictly focused on securing a 1 lakh crore grant for urban development projects. He further noted that the responsibility of disciplining ministers and legislators rests solely with the Chief Minister, while his own role remains focused on communicating party matters to the central leadership.
In a candid reflection on the future of the Karnataka cabinet, Shivakumar voiced support for the “new generation” of legislators seeking ministerial roles. Responding to reports of first-time MLAs petitioning the high command for representation, he remarked that fresh blood and new ideas are essential for the party’s growth. “We cannot hold on to power forever; I have been a minister for 36 years,” Shivakumar stated, affirming that he supports the inclusion of new faces in the upcoming cabinet expansion.
