A jibe by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during an Assembly debate has reignited claims of political rivalry and internal tensions within the BJP.

A sharp political exchange erupted after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “do namoone” remark in the state Assembly triggered a strong response from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who claimed it exposed internal tensions within the BJP.

The remarks came during a debate in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly where the opposition questioned the state government over the alleged smuggling of Codeine-based cough syrup.

Leaders of the Opposition argued that timely action could have prevented the deaths of hundreds of children. However, Yogi Adityanath dismissed the charge, saying no child in Uttar Pradesh had died due to the consumption of the cough syrup.

During his response, the Chief Minister, without naming anyone, took a swipe at opposition leaders. Addressing Samajwadi Party members, he said, “There are two namoones (specimens), one is in Delhi, and the other in Lucknow. Whenever a discussion takes place in the country, he flees abroad. I think the same is happening with your babua. He would travel to England and you will keep shouting here.”

While he did not mention any name, the remark was believed to be an attack on Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Akhilesh Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and a Lok Sabha MP. The video of the Assembly speech was later shared by Adityanath on X .

Akhilesh Yadav responded within minutes, calling the remark a “confession” and suggesting it reflected a power struggle within the BJP. “No one thought that the Delhi-Lucknow clash would reach this point. Those on constitutional posts should not cross the line of decorum. The BJP should not bring its infighting into the open,” the Kannauj MP said on X.

pic.twitter.com/99SMGEgD7M

This is not the first time Adityanath has targeted opposition leaders with sharp remarks. Earlier, while campaigning ahead of the Bihar elections, he had mocked Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav as “three monkeys”. At the rally, he said, “Just as Mahatma Gandhi had three monkeys, today the INDIA alliance brought in three monkeys in the name of Pappu, Tappu, and Appu (Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, and Akhilesh Yadav). Pappu cannot speak the truth or say anything good. Tappu cannot see any truth, and Appu cannot hear the truth.”

The Samajwadi Party has repeatedly alleged a power tussle between the Uttar Pradesh government and the BJP’s central leadership. Party leaders have pointed to the appointment of deputy chief ministers and certain bureaucrats as signs of attempts to curb the Chief Minister’s authority.
