A day after West Bengal registered a record voter turnout of 92.88 per cent in the first phase of voting in the Assembly Election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence in the BJP’s win, describing it as a “death knell for the Trinamool’s Jungle Raj”.
The Prime Minister was addressing an election rally in Dum Dum, North 24 Parganas. BJP’s Arijit Bakshi is in the fray against TMC’s Bratyabrata Basu, who is also the sitting MLA from Dum Dum.
“Last night, TMC was empowering their goons all night long. I say to the people of Bengal, BJP workers, and the public: Do not forget that this is the land of revolution, this is the land of the brave… After the results come on May 4, the TMC’s goons will find no place to hide, no one to save them. Yesterday’s first-phase voting has sounded the death knell for the TMC’s reign of jungle rule”, PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister asserted confidence in the BJP’s victory in the Assembly Election, saying, “For a long time, a wave of change was visible in Bengal — and the first phase of voting yesterday has confirmed it. The support seen in favour of the BJP has sounded the bugle for the party’s victory”.
“It is time for a new revolution in Bengal”, he added.

PM’s ‘Anti-Women’ Jibe, Then A Promise
Referring to the brutal rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in August 2024, Prime Minister Modi lashed out at the ruling Trinamool, calling it an “anti-women” party.
“The women of Bengal are saying that they will change the TMC govt in the state. TMC is an anti- women party, while BJP works on the model of women-led development. The mother who made her daughter study to become a daughter but her daughter fell victim to TMC’s jungle raj, was made a candidate by the BJP”, PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister affirmed that the BJP — once it comes to power in Bengal — will not allow “anyone to crush the dreams of daughters”.

“BJP also gave an opportunity to the Sandeshkhali victims to lead. When the daughters of Bengal seek justice, TMC tells them not to step out of their homes to avoid rape. TMC does not want women to dream. Today, I assure every daughter of Bengal that the BJP will not allow anyone to trample the dreams of daughters of Bengal. I assure you that the safety of women will be our priority. On 4th May, after BJP govt is formed, files will be opened over all the atrocities caused against women. This is Modi’s guarantee.”
In West Bengal — where 152 of the total 294 Assembly seats went to polls in the first phase — the turnout was recorded 92.88 per cent, according to the official data from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The previous record high was 84.72 per cent in 2011, when TMC Supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came to power, ending the 34-year-rule of the CPI(M).
