Staring at a massive defeat, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of looting at least 100 seats in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections and trained her guns at the Election Commission for colluding with the saffron party.

“More than 100 seats, the BJP looted. The Election Commission is the BJP’s commission. I complained to the CO and also Manoj Agrawal, but they are not doing anything. Do you think this is a victory?” she told reporters at a Bhabanipur counting centre.

Banerjee said the BJP’s victory was “immoral”, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah used central forces and the poll body to defeat the Trinamool Congress through unfair means. “It is loot, loot, loot. We will bounce back,” she said.

This came after the TMC suffered a stunning defeat in West Bengal, being pushed back to just 79 seats in the face of a dominant performance by the BJP. As of 11 pm, the BJP has won and is leading in 208 seats, signifying a saffron push in the state.

To make matters worse, Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari in her home turf of Bhabanipur, a constituency she has representated since 2011. After the final round of counting, Suvendu Adhikari received 73,463 votes in his favour, while Mamata Banerjee managed to get 58,349, as per official data.

Moreover, Banerjee alleged that she was physically attacked during the counting process in Bhabanipur. Speaking in Kolkata, Banerjee said, “From 3 pm onwards, they have been beating us. I was hit. CCTV was switched off.”

She further claimed that her party’s representatives were denied access to the counting centres, raising serious concerns about the conduct of the process. She also levelled allegations of large-scale electoral malpractice, asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had manipulated outcomes across multiple constituencies.

According to a PTI report, the election outcome represents more than just a change in government; it marks a “structural rupture” in West Bengal’s political landscape. With authority concentrated at the top, the party could face difficulties maintaining cohesion, especially if sections of its leadership become susceptible to defections.
