The ‘Battle for the Throne’ in Kerala may have reached its logical conclusion with the Congress finally picking VD Satheesan as Chief Minister, but the impending absence of one of the party’s most visible global faces at the swearing-in ceremony has ensured that the embers of internal friction remain warm. On May 18, while the Lok Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram prepares for a historic transition of power, Dr Shashi Tharoor will be precisely 8,112 miles away—celebrating a half-century of personal history in the United States.

Academics and Anniversaries

Taking to X to clarify his absence, the Thiruvananthapuram MP, whose name was also being touted at one point as a possible CM candidate, revealed he is in Boston this weekend for a dual milestone at his alma mater, the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University. Tharoor is slated to deliver the prestigious commencement address and participate in the 50th anniversary reunion of his graduating class.

I’m sorry to be missing the swearing-in ceremony of my @incKerala colleague and new CM of Kerala @vdsatheesan. I am in Boston this weekend to deliver the Commencement address at the graduation ceremony of my alma mater, the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at @TuftsUniversity —…— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) May 15, 2026

“An occasion for celebrating the past in the US even as I look forward to the future in Kerala,” Tharoor posted. On the surface, the reason is unassailable; a keynote address at one’s alma mater after five decades is a rare, career-defining honour that few politicians would decline.

Optics in Focus

However, in the hypersensitive theatre of Kerala Congress politics, timing is rarely seen as a mere coincidence. Observers say Tharoor’s physical absence provides a convenient “strategic pause” from the immediate optics of the KC Venugopal vs VD Satheesan fallout. While the central leadership was forced to “eat humble pie” by opting for Satheesan over Venugopal, Tharoor’s presence in Boston allows him to remain untouched by the visible awkwardness of the outcome.

There is a subtle irony in Tharoor celebrating a “reunion” in Boston while his own party in Kerala attempts a messy reunion of its warring factions. For a leader who has often been sidelined by the state’s organisational “A” and “I” groups, this overseas trip reinforces his image as the “outsider-insider”—a man who operates on a global plane, even as he eyes the local “future”.

Future Tense in the ‘Future in Kerala’

The closing line of Tharoor’s post—emphasising his look towards the “future in Kerala”—has not missed its mark. With Satheesan now established as a powerful, independent-minded CM, the precedent for leaders who don’t fit the traditional “subservient” mould has been set. Whether Tharoor’s return from the hallowed halls of Tufts signals a more assertive role in the new administration or if he continues to hover just outside the inner circle remains the most compelling subplot of the May 18 ceremony.
