DMK, AAP skip meetingFocus on 2029 strategy?

INDIA Bloc Meet Live Updates: The INDIA bloc meeting has brought together leaders of nearly 23 opposition parties in Delhi, marking a significant gathering of the INDIA bloc alliance as it looks to regroup after recent Assembly election setbacks suffered by several regional partners. The meeting comes at a crucial time for the opposition, with discussions expected on strengthening coordination among INDIA bloc parties, resolving internal differences and preparing for upcoming state elections as well as the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

The gathering, informally referred to as the “Janbandhan” meeting, is also expected to address broader questions about the future of the alliance, including its strategy against the NDA. With renewed focus on opposition unity, leaders are likely to review the alliance’s performance, discuss the INDIA bloc members list, assess the INDIA bloc Lok Sabha seats tally and chart a roadmap for the next electoral cycle amid the continuing INDIA bloc vs NDA political contest.

DMK, AAP skip meeting

The meeting has generated interest over which parties will attend and what role key regional players will play in future alliance decisions.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already publicly distanced itself from the bloc. Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) earlier announced that it would boycott the meeting after the Congress ended ties with it in Tamil Nadu and joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government.

Questions have also been raised about whether the TVK could eventually be included in the alliance framework.

According to information available ahead of the INDIA bloc leaders meeting, senior opposition figures attended the event at the Constitution Club.

Among those expected are Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray.

Leaders from Left parties and several smaller regional parties are also likely to participate.

Focus on 2029 strategy?

The opposition alliance meeting is expected to focus on strengthening coordination against the BJP ahead of upcoming electoral contests. Leaders are likely to discuss plans for state elections as well as preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

The last official meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) took place in New Delhi on June 1, 2024, shortly before the Lok Sabha elections. Following that, nearly 50 alliance leaders held discussions on allegations of electoral manipulation. Separate consultations were also conducted ahead of Parliament sessions.
