DMK vs TVK: DMK chief MK Stalin on Sunday questioned the stability of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government, and claimed that it may not complete its full five-year term.

While speaking at a party event in Chennai where more than 5,000 leaders and workers from various parties joined the DMK, Stalin said that the ruling party did not have the numbers to form a stable government on its own.

Stalin emphasised that “minority” government led by Vijay may collapse within the next three to six months as it was running with the support of parties who were until recently part of his party-led alliance.

“Let us look at the reality. The present ruling party did not win a majority to form a stable government on its own strength,” the former Chief Minister said as quoted by news agency PTI.

He claimed that the TVK government was surviving with the support of parties that had earlier been part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.

“It is only because of the tactical alignment and support of certain parties who were until recently part of our progressive alliance that this TVK vehicle is managing to move at all,” he said.

Calling on the newly inducted members and party cadre to remain election-ready, Stalin said the DMK should begin groundwork immediately instead of waiting for poll dates to be announced.

“This is a shaky setup. We do not know at which junction or turning this vehicle is going to lose its balance and come to a sudden halt. Therefore, I am telling you, elections can come at any time. It could happen in three months, or it could happen in six months. We cannot afford to wait for a five-year cycle,” he said.

Stalin urged DMK workers to begin election preparations immediately instead of waiting for poll dates to be announced.

“We must be 100 per cent prepared for any political eventuality. From this moment onwards, work sincerely for the party’s victory,” he told party workers.

The remarks come amid changing political equations in Tamil Nadu. TVK fell short of the majority mark after the April 23 polls and later secured enough support to form the government with the backing of the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML, all of which had contested the election as part of the DMK-led alliance before switching support to Vijay.

On Saturday, Vaiko-led MDMK also exited the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and announced its support for the ruling TVK.
