An Abu Dhabi court has handed down a tough sentence to a driver whose dangerous behaviour on a public road put other motorists’ lives at risk. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court sentenced the man to six months in prison, imposed a Dh70,000 financial penalty, and ordered the suspension of his driving licence for one year after he was convicted of reckless driving. The verdict comes as UAE authorities continue a zero-tolerance approach toward serious traffic offences, warning that reckless driving is not simply a traffic violation but a criminal act that can have devastating consequences.

Reckless driving in Abu Dhabi

According to the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution, investigations revealed that the driver intentionally swerved his vehicle repeatedly while travelling on a public road, carrying out dangerous manoeuvres that endangered both his own life and the safety of other road users.Authorities detected the reckless driving incident, arrested the motorist and referred him to the Public Prosecution. The case was then fast-tracked to the Criminal Court.During the trial, prosecutors relied on evidence including police reports, investigation records, technical findings and surveillance camera footage that documented the driver’s dangerous conduct. After examining the evidence, the court found the charges proven and ruled that the defendant had deliberately engaged in behaviour that posed a serious threat to public safety.

Driver sentenced to jail, Dh70,000

In addition to the six-month prison sentence, the court imposed a Dh50,000 fine for the reckless driving offence. It also ordered the driver to pay Dh20,000, representing the assessed value of the vehicle used during the offence because it belonged to another person and could not be confiscated under the applicable legal provisions. The court further ruled that the driver’s licence would be suspended for one year, with the suspension taking effect after he completes his prison sentence.Taken together, the ruling means the offender will serve time in jail, pay a total of Dh70,000, and remain prohibited from driving for a year after his release.

UAE authorities warn reckless driving

Following the verdict, the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution renewed its warning to motorists, urging drivers to comply with traffic laws and exercise caution behind the wheel. The authority stressed that dangerous driving behaviours, including reckless swerving and manoeuvres that endanger lives, carry serious criminal consequences under UAE law. Such offences not only threaten the safety of motorists and pedestrians but can also result in imprisonment, substantial fines, licence suspension and vehicle-related penalties depending on the circumstances of each case. The latest judgment reinforces Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and deter dangerous driving, sending a clear message that behaviour which puts lives at risk will be met with swift prosecution and severe punishment.
