7 pink lakes in Australia and the science behind their unusual colours

There is something slightly unexpected about seeing a pink lake for the first time. In photographs, the colour can seem exaggerated, almost artificial. Standing beside one is different. The shades shift with weather, sunlight and water conditions, sometimes appearing pale rose, sometimes closer to crimson, and occasionally fading towards white. Across Australia, these lakes are scattered through deserts, coastal regions and national parks, creating landscapes that look entirely unlike the beaches and bushland many visitors associate with the country. According to Tourism Australia, some are easy roadside stops. Others are best seen from the air. Together, they form a surprisingly varied collection of natural landmarks spread across several states.

7 pink lakes to see in Australia: From Hutt Lagoon to Lake MacDonnell

1. Pink and rainbow lakes of Western Australia

Near Esperance in Western Australia, visitors can find not just one pink lake but an entire network of colourful salt lakes. Known collectively as the Pink and Rainbow Lakes, they appear in shades ranging from soft pink to orange and deep red depending on seasonal conditions. The scale of the landscape becomes most obvious from above. Scenic flights reveal dozens of lakes scattered across the countryside, contrasting sharply with the white beaches and turquoise waters that have made the Esperance region famous. While the colours vary throughout the year, the stretch between June and January is often considered the most rewarding period for viewing the full spectrum.2. Hutt Lagoon

Further north along Western Australia’s Coral Coast lies Hutt Lagoon, one of the country’s most recognised pink lakes. What makes it distinctive is the way its appearance rarely stays the same for long.Cloud cover, time of day, and seasonal conditions can dramatically alter the lake’s colour. On some days, it appears bright pink. At other times, visitors may notice purple tones or deeper reddish shades across the water. The lake sits near Kalbarri and is often viewed from roadside lookouts, although aerial tours offer a clearer sense of its unusual colour patterns.3. Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre

South Australia’s Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is better known as Australia’s largest salt lake than as a pink lake. Yet during periods when floodwaters reach the basin, the landscape changes considerably. For much of the time, visitors encounter a vast white salt pan stretching across the outback. Following significant flooding events, however, water spreads across the basin and brings dramatic changes. Birdlife returns in large numbers, vegetation appears in places usually dominated by salt, and parts of the lake can develop soft pink, orange and yellow tones. The transformation is temporary, which adds to its appeal for those fortunate enough to witness it.4. Lake Bumbunga

Less than two hours from Adelaide, Lake Bumbunga has become one of South Australia’s most photographed lakes. Its accessibility has helped make it a popular stop for travellers exploring the Clare Valley region. The colours here are not fixed. Changes in salinity and environmental conditions can alter the appearance of the water and shoreline, creating combinations of pink and white that vary throughout the year. Photographers often visit at different times, hoping to capture a slightly different version of the lake each trip.5. Lake MacDonnell

On the Eyre Peninsula, Lake MacDonnell presents one of the most unusual colour combinations among Australia’s pink lakes. A narrow road separates intensely pink water on one side from blue-green water on the other, producing a scene that often attracts visitors travelling through the region. The contrast is especially noticeable along the route known as Watermelon Avenue. High salt levels contribute to the lake’s vivid pink appearance, while the neighbouring water bodies display entirely different colours. The result is less a single lake and more a landscape of contrasting tones laid out side by side.6. Lake Hart

Lake Hart sits in a remote part of South Australia where vast horizons dominate the view. The lake’s shallow waters and high salt content create pale pink surfaces that can sparkle under strong sunlight. Its isolation has become part of its attraction. During daylight hours, visitors encounter shimmering salt formations and pastel colours. After sunset, the absence of urban light creates favourable conditions for stargazing, giving the lake an altogether different character.7. Victoria’s pink lakes

Pink lakes are not confined to Western Australia and South Australia. In Victoria’s Murray-Sunset National Park, several pink lakes appear across the north-western landscape. The lakes can fluctuate between vivid pink and almost white depending on conditions. Interestingly, some visitors report the colours appearing strongest during overcast weather rather than under bright sunshine. The surrounding national park adds another dimension to the experience, with walking tracks, camping areas and open landscapes extending well beyond the lakes themselves.
