Trending 80’s AI Makeover: The 1980s are back on social media, but this time, politicians are getting the retro makeover. A growing AI trend has seen political leaders transformed into 1980s-style versions of themselves, complete with period fashion, hairstyles, cars, poses and vintage photography effects. In Uttar Pradesh, several prominent politicians have joined the trend, including Brajesh Pathak, Nand Gopal Gupta, Aparna Bisht Yadav and Aditi Singh, among others. The trend has also caught the attention of political figures outside Uttar Pradesh, turning what began as an AI-driven nostalgia experiment into a wider social media moment involving leaders from different parties.

Actor-politician Ravi Kishan also joined the viral 1980s AI trend, sharing a retro-styled image of himself on X. In the AI-generated picture, Kishan can be seen wearing a white T-shirt and denim, sporting sunglasses and posing against a car, giving the image a distinctly 80s feel. “The 80s called. We answered in style,” Kishan wrote while sharing the picture. Union Minister Piyush Goyal soon noticed the post and reacted with a playful “Adbhut the amazing” along with a fire emoji, adding another light-hearted moment to the growing social media trend.

Which UP Politicians Have Joined The 1980s AI Trend? Among the Uttar Pradesh political figures participating in the trend are Brajesh Pathak, Nand Gopal Gupta, Aparna Bisht Yadav, Aditi Singh and several other political figures from the state. Their AI-generated images recreate the visual language associated with India’s 1980s popular culture, giving contemporary political personalities a distinctly retro appearance. The images are not simply old-fashioned filters. AI image-generation tools can alter clothing, hairstyles, backgrounds, vehicles, poses, lighting and photographic textures to make a modern photograph look as though it belongs to another era.

The nostalgia wave has not remained limited to Uttar Pradesh. Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, have also featured in the AI-generated 1980s trend. BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Chirag Paswan have joined the trend as well, while political figures including Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also been referenced in the wider wave of retro political imagery. The result is an unusual social media space where politicians who are normally seen through campaign speeches, parliamentary debates and political statements are instead appearing in deliberately nostalgic, often playful avatars.

What Does The AI 1980s Trend Look Like? The trend takes contemporary photographs and gives them a visual treatment inspired by the fashion and photography of the decade. For Indian versions of the trend, AI prompts can introduce details such as vibrant sarees, oversized statement jewellery, voluminous hairstyles, prominent moustaches, wide-collared shirts, high-waisted trousers and oversized sunglasses. The background can also be transformed with elements associated with the period, including vintage cars, old-fashioned interiors, streetscapes and retro props. Photography effects are another important part of the look. Grain, muted tones, studio-style portraits, older camera aesthetics and period-appropriate lighting can make the generated image appear more convincingly rooted in the 1980s.

Why Are Politicians Joining The AI Nostalgia Wave? For political leaders, the trend offers a break from conventional political communication. Instead of posting about government schemes, political meetings or public events, leaders can participate in a lighter social media conversation built around nostalgia and popular culture. It also gives politicians a way to engage with younger audiences who may know the 1980s largely through photographs, films, music, fashion and internet culture rather than personal experience. That has given the trend a distinctly Gen Z-friendly character. The appeal lies partly in seeing familiar public figures placed in an unexpected visual setting. The trend has also brought political figures from different parties into the same online conversation, even if their reasons for participating may differ.

The Indian Twist To The 1980s AI Craze: While retro AI imagery is not limited to India, the trend has developed its own Indian visual identity. Rather than simply recreating generic Western 1980s fashion, prompts can ask AI tools to incorporate Indian clothing, jewellery, hairstyles, interiors, cars and cultural settings from the period. This is why one AI-generated image may feature a politician in a richly coloured saree with large jewellery and a dramatic hairstyle, while another may use a wide-collared shirt, high-waisted trousers and oversized sunglasses. The combination of Indian styling and vintage photographic effects is helping the trend stand out on social media.

Create The 1980s Look In ChatGPT: Wondering how to make your own 1980s-style AI image? ChatGPT can create a new image from a written description, or you can upload an existing photograph and ask ChatGPT to transform it. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Images also allows users to make targeted edits to an image and specify details such as the composition, lighting, clothing and visual style. For the kind of look being used in the political trend, a prompt can be as simple as: “Transform this photo into an authentic Indian 1980s portrait. Keep the person’s facial identity recognisable. Give them period-appropriate 1980s clothing, hairstyle and accessories, add vintage Indian surroundings, analogue film grain, warm studio lighting and the look of a photograph taken in the 1980s. Keep the pose natural and realistic.” The key is to describe the era, Indian styling, setting, photography and what should remain unchanged. OpenAI recommends clear, specific prompts and targeted revisions rather than relying on vague descriptions.

You can also ask for a particular Indian 1980s aesthetic, such as a Bollywood-inspired studio portrait, a vintage family photograph, a 1980s political campaign-style portrait, a retro Indian wedding photograph, a period office or newsroom setting, or a classic Indian street scene featuring vintage cars. If you are editing an existing photograph, you can also tell ChatGPT exactly what you want to change while asking it to preserve the person’s appearance. ChatGPT Images supports both direct conversational edits and selection-based edits.

A Trend That Turns Politics Into Nostalgia: The AI 1980s trend is ultimately less about politics and more about the novelty of seeing familiar faces in an unfamiliar era. For UP politicians and other public figures, it provides a playful alternative to conventional political posts. For social media users, it offers an easy way to experiment with an era defined by distinctive fashion, hairstyles, music, cars and photography. And as more politicians join the nostalgia wave, the trend is showing how AI-generated imagery can turn even recognisable political personalities into characters from a very different time.
