Independent candidate Jagdish Prasad defeated BJP’s Ramsharan by that one vote. The count read 151 to 150. In a ward where the contest had been expected to be close, nobody had quite imagined it would be this close.
Every slip of paper counted out in that hall carried the weight of the whole result, and by the time the final figure was read aloud, the margin between winning and losing had narrowed to the thinnest number in electoral politics.
How Did One Vote Decide The Ward?
Supporters on both sides had followed the counting number by number, the lead shifting and holding and shifting again. When it ended, Jagdish Prasad stood at 151 and Ramsharan at 150. One vote fewer for the winner, or one more for the runner-up, and Nadbai’s ward 6 would have had a different councillor.
It is the kind of margin candidates talk about for years afterwards — the neighbour who did not turn up, the relative who was travelling, the queue that moved too slowly.

Because the celebration and the grief arrived almost together. Jagdish Prasad’s mother had gone out and cast her vote on polling day. She died the following day.
By the time the result came in, the household that should have been receiving sweets was receiving condolences instead. A son had won his first election; his mother was no longer there to be told.
