Rajasthan Civic Polls: A mother's final act as a citizen may have been the one that carried her son through.

Rajasthan Civic Polls: A mother’s final act as a citizen may have been the one that carried her son through.

Some election results are decided by arithmetic. A few are remembered for something else entirely. In ward 6 of Nadbai municipality in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, the verdict came down to a single vote — and to a woman who walked to the polling booth one day, and was gone the next.

Independent candidate Jagdish Prasad defeated BJP’s Ramsharan by that one vote. The count read 151 to 150. In a ward where the contest had been expected to be close, nobody had quite imagined it would be this close.

Every slip of paper counted out in that hall carried the weight of the whole result, and by the time the final figure was read aloud, the margin between winning and losing had narrowed to the thinnest number in electoral politics.

How Did One Vote Decide The Ward?

Supporters on both sides had followed the counting number by number, the lead shifting and holding and shifting again. When it ended, Jagdish Prasad stood at 151 and Ramsharan at 150. One vote fewer for the winner, or one more for the runner-up, and Nadbai’s ward 6 would have had a different councillor.

It is the kind of margin candidates talk about for years afterwards — the neighbour who did not turn up, the relative who was travelling, the queue that moved too slowly.

Why Has This Win Left A Family In Mourning?

Because the celebration and the grief arrived almost together. Jagdish Prasad’s mother had gone out and cast her vote on polling day. She died the following day.

By the time the result came in, the household that should have been receiving sweets was receiving condolences instead. A son had won his first election; his mother was no longer there to be told.

What Are People In Nadbai Saying About Her Last Vote?

That a mother’s final act as a citizen may have been the one that carried her son through. It is an impossible thing to prove — the secrecy of the ballot means no one can say which candidate any voter chose, and this story does not claim otherwise.

But a margin of one invites the thought, and in Nadbai the thought has taken hold. For the family, the coincidence is not a statistic to be verified.

It is simply the way they will remember this election: the last vote she ever cast, and the single vote by which her son won.

Between 151 and 150 lies a number. Between polling day and the day after lies everything else.

Independent candidate Jagdish Prasad won the Ward 6 seat in Nadbai municipality by a margin of just one vote. He secured 151 votes to defeat his opponent, Ramsharan of the BJP, who finished with 150 votes.

The victory brought mixed emotions because Jagdish Prasad’s mother passed away just one day after casting her vote in the civic polls. By the time the election results were announced and his one-vote victory was confirmed, the family was mourning her death.

Local residents have been deeply moved by the coincidence, pointing out that her final act as a citizen before her death may have been the decisive vote that carried her son to victory. Because the margin of victory was exactly one vote, the family remembers it as the single vote that won him the election.
