The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised hallmarking fees applicable to gold and silver articles. The changes have been notified through the Bureau of Indian Standards (Hallmarking) Amendment Regulations, 2026, and came into effect on September 14, 2026.
What is the new hallmarking fee for gold articles?
Under the revised rules, jewellers will have to pay Rs 75 per gold article to a recognised Assaying and Hallmarking centre. A minimum fee of Rs 200 per consignment will apply, as per the notification from the government.
The hallmarking charge paid by jewellers for gold articles has increased from Rs 45 to Rs 75 per article, a rise of Rs 30 or 66.7%. However, the minimum charge for a consignment remains unchanged at Rs 200.
The BIS will also levy a fee on the Assaying and Hallmarking Centre for gold articles. This has been fixed at Rs 7.50 per article, with a minimum fee of Rs 20 per consignment.
What is the hallmarking fee for silver articles?
For silver articles, the hallmarking fee payable by jewellers has been fixed at Rs 35 per article, with a minimum charge of Rs 150 per consignment. The rate remains the same as the previous rate.
The BIS fee payable by the AHC for silver articles will be Rs 3.50 per article, subject to a minimum fee of Rs 15 per consignment, as per the notification.
When will the revised hallmarking fees apply?

What is HUID in the hallmarked gold jewellery?
HUID is a Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number and it is one of the components of hallmark. It is a six-digit alphanumeric number which is unique for each hallmarked item and is traceable. Customers can also verify the HUID number in the BIS Care App using the ‘Verify HUID’ feature.
Are the hallmarking charges dependent on the weight of jewellery?
No, hallmarking charges are paid per article irrespective of the weight of the article.
What should be looked at in a jewellery shop while purchasing the hallmarked jewellery?
On the outside of the sales outlet, the registered/certified jeweller shall display the logo of BIS with the wording ‘Hallmarked jewellery available for sale’. The certificate of registration issued by the BIS shall be displayed by the jeweller in a jewellery shop. A jeweller shall have a magnifying glass of minimum 10X magnification to show the hallmark to a customer in the hallmarked jewellery. The relation of fineness with caratage should also be displayed by the jeweller.
