Ahead of IPL 2027, Mumbai Indians is preparing for something big. The 5-time champions and head coach Mahela Jayawardene will no longer be available with team as he has decided to part ways, say sources.
Not just this, team officials are also planning to bring back Rohit Sharma as captain. Skipper Hardik Pandya could be traded as multiple teams are approaching for him. Experts suggest that Rohit Sharma’s potential return to the role of captain could play a pivotal role in Mumbai’s pursuit of a sixth IPL title.
Mumbai Indians is parting ways with head coach Mahela Jayawardene ahead of IPL 2027 and is reportedly considering reinstating Rohit Sharma as captain while potentially trading current skipper Hardik Pandya.
However, the franchise has yet to announce any formal changes to the captaincy.
Mahila Jayawardene’s exit will raise crucial questions for team management on MI’s coaching, strategy and leadership.
The Sri Lankan coach has had tremendous success with Mumbai Indians during his two stints as head coach, leading the team to IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He was first hired in 2017 and played a key role in taking the team to the finals of each of the three IPL seasons before he moved to a broader leadership role in the organisation in 2022, before resuming his role as head coach for the 2025 campaign.
Mumbai Indians acknowledged Jayawardene’s contribution, with owner Nita Ambani thanking him for his guidance, integrity and commitment to the franchise over the years.
Jayawardene has also expressed his gratitude for his association with Mumbai Indians, describing them as a special part of his career. He extended his thanks to the players, coaching staff and the supporters for the contribution to the experience.
Mumbai Indians to consider coaching changes for IPL 2027
The change in the head coach comes at a time when Mumbai Indians are also questioning their captaincy choices. Rohit Sharma, who has led Mumbai Indians to all five of their IPL championships, has emerged as a viable candidate to resume the role ahead of the 2027 season.
He was replaced by Hardik Pandya before IPL 2024, following his return to Mumbai from Gujarat Titans. The move proved to be a turning point for the franchise, which finished last in 2024 before climbing back to the playoffs in 2025.
Despite the improvement, Mumbai have failed to add another IPL trophy to their collection since their triumph in 2020. The franchise will now have to find the right balance of experience, leadership and consistency in order to achieve continued success.
