Prithviraj Sukumaran Bollywood Journey: Over the years, the boundaries between linguistic cinema have been blurring in India. While there has been a subsequent rise in pan India films especially after the humongous success of the Baahubali franchise, we have also seen several South stars entering Bollywood with full-fledged projects. From Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan to R Madhavan, Rana Daggubati, Kiccha Sudeep, Dulquer Salmaan etc., the list is huge and each actor has managed to generate their own fan following in the Hindi market.
Amid these, there has been one Southern star who is back with yet another Bollywood release. We are talking about Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is now making headlines with Daayra. Despite, the actor winning hearts with his performance in this Meghna Gulzar directorial, Daayra has tanked at the Indian box office and has emerged as yet another flop movie in Prithviraj’s filmography in Bollywood. Interestingly, the actor, who has done 5 Bollywood movies in 14 years, is still struggling to get a box office hit in the Hindi market, proving that he is jinxed in the Hindi film industry.

For the uninitiated, Prithviraj made his big Bollywood debut with Rani Mukerji starrer Aiyya in 2012 which made an opening day collection of only Rs 1.35cr and a lifetime collection of Rs 6.63cr. It was followed by Arjun Kapoor starrer Aurangzeb in 2013 which opened its box office journey with Rs 3.92cr and wrapped it at Rs 22.35cr.
After taking a break from Bollywood for 4 years, Prithviraj came with Naam Shabana in 2017 wherein he played the role of lead antagonist opposite Taapsee Pannu. The movie made an opening day collection of Rs 5.12cr and failed to touch Rs 50cr as it wrapped at Rs 36.76cr. He took the role of lead antagonist once again for Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff starrer Bade Miyan Chote Miyan which failed to leave a mark not just on the audience but also at the ticket windows. The movie made an opening day collection of Rs 16.07cr and made a lifetime collection of Rs 59.17cr. Prithviraj also came with Sarzameen with Kajol and Ibrahim Ali Khan which was a Netflix original but failed to create enough buzz among fans.

And now Daayra has emerged as a disaster with an opening day collection of Rs 1cr and has failed to touch Rs 10cr in a week of its release. While Prithviraj delivering another box office disaster has got the tongues wagging, we asked film business expert Sumit Kadel about the actor’s disappointing journey in Bollywood. In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat, Sumit stated, “Prithviraj was never a star in the Hindi belt. As an actor, he is very good, but he cannot draw audiences to theatres solely on the strength of his name”.
On the other hand, film business expert Rohit Jaiswal opined that the kind of roles Prithviraj has been doing in Bollywood is failing to click with the audience. He emphasised, “There is no doubt that all the films he has done in Bollywood have flops and I think he should take a break from Hindi films for a while as things aren’t going in his favour as of now”. Rohit also asserted that Prithviraj needs to have a better choice for scripts in Hindi market and needs to experiment with his looks which is quite stereotypical in most of his films.
Meanwhile, Daayra, which marks his first collaboration with Kareena, has made a collection of Rs 6.36cr nett in a week of release while the gross collection turned out to be Rs 7.62cr. On the other hand, the crime action thriller has made a worldwide collection of Rs 9.72cr in 7 days of release. With Siddharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia’s The Vvaan hitting the screens on September 25, it will be interesting to see if this Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer will be able to survive another week at the box office. Besides, it will be worth the wait if Prithviraj will reconsider his choices in Hindi market in the coming days.
