A DMK leader’s cryptic “Backstabbers” post on social media has raised eyebrows amid political speculation over Congress possibly extending support to TVK chief Vijay for forming the next government in Tamil Nadu.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai posted just two words—“The Backstabbers”—on X shortly after the Congress on Tuesday said that TVK had approached it seeking support to form a government in the state.

The post has since drawn attention, though it is not clear whether it was directed at Congress or other political players.

The Congress had earlier said its central leadership had asked the Tamil Nadu unit to take a final decision on TVK’s request, keeping in mind “the sentiments of the state”. It also reiterated that the mandate in Tamil Nadu was for a secular government and that it would oppose any role for the BJP or its allies in government formation.

Top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, held a meeting in Delhi on Tuesday evening to discuss the post-poll scenario.

After the meeting, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said TVK chief Vijay had formally sought the party’s support and had also spoken about drawing inspiration from former chief minister K Kamaraj in his political approach. He said the leadership had left the final decision to the state unit.

TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly but fell short of a majority. It now needs the support of at least 10 MLAs to form the government. Congress has five seats, while smaller parties hold limited numbers.

The DMK, which was an ally of Congress during the election, won 59 seats, while the AIADMK secured 47. The BJP won just one seat.
