The DMK has called Congress “backstabbers” after the grand old party walked out of an alliance with MK Stalin to form the government with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said that his support does not endorse the “unilateral” decision of Congress to support the TVK.

Reacting to the Congress move, DMK leader Kanimozhi said that it is an individual party’s decision. “People have decided to vote for TVK. We respect the verdict… It is an individual party’s decision. We don’t have any say in that. We fought the elections together,” he added.
However, Manickam Tagore, Congress MP from Virudhunagar seat in Tamil Nadu, dismissed Saravanan’s comments as “baseless” and said they are driven by frustration. He reiterated that Congress’s primary objective is to prevent the BJP from gaining ground in Tamil Nadu.
In a post on X, Tagore said the Tamil Nadu verdict has gone against the MK Stalin government and the Congress party faced collateral damage.
The verdict has gone against the DMK government.Half the ministers in the Cabinet have lost their seats. We faced collateral damage for no fault of ours. Now, BJP is eyeing Tamil Nadu. The question before us is clear:Should we stand with those rejected by the people’s verdict,…— Manickam Tagore .B🇮🇳மாணிக்கம் தாகூர்.ப (@manickamtagore) May 6, 2026
The Congress, which has five MLAs in Tamil Nadu, directed the state unit to take a call on supporting Vijay. Later, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of Tamil Nadu Congress decided to back Vijay at a late Tuesday night meeting. The party has officially entered into an alliance, not just to form elections, but also for future local body, assembly, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha elections.
Congress has said that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government, and it is determined not to “have BJP and its proxies” run the government in the southern state. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said that Vijay had reached out to Congress and sought support to form the government.
“TVK President Thiru Vijay has requested the Indian National Congress for support to form a Government in Tamil Nadu. He has spoken about drawing inspiration from Perumthalaivar Kamaraj as well, in his political mission. The INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government that is committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit,” Venugopal said in a post on X.
