The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday criticised the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, over the INDIA bloc’s protest against the Election Commission, accusing him of creating a “political drama” and making false claims about seeking a meeting with the poll panel.

Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi cited the Election Commission’s statement that no request for a meeting had been received from any party until 4 pm.

“Rahul Gandhi, an expert in political drama, spent the entire day creating a spectacle. Now, the facts officially released by the Election Commission through its press release have exposed his lies,” Trivedi said.

‘Political Drama’: BJP Slams Oppn Protest

He claimed the Election Commission had informed Gandhi around 4 pm that it was ready to meet the delegation under its prescribed procedure. Trivedi said Gandhi instead insisted on taking around 300 MPs to the Commission’s office, calling the demand unprecedented.

“However, he insisted on meeting in a different manner. He was claiming that there were 300 MPs and that he would go to the Election Commission premises along with all 300 MPs—something that has never happened in the history of India,” the BJP leader added.

BJP Tears Into Congress

Trivedi also alleged that the Opposition refused the ECI’s offer to send a senior official to receive their memorandum at the protest site.

“Therefore, it is clear that their objective was not actually to present their concerns before the Election Commission,” he said.

Questioning the Opposition’s claim about the number of MPs participating, Trivedi said the Congress had 129 MPs across both Houses and alleged that several major INDIA bloc parties did not participate in the protest.

“What an enormous lie!” he said, questioning where the figure of 300 MPs came from. Trivedi also questioned the absence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior lawyers from the protest, alleging that the Opposition’s objective was political rather than to raise concerns before the poll panel.

The BJP criticized Rahul Gandhi for creating political drama and making false claims that the Opposition had sought a meeting with the poll panel. According to BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, the Election Commission stated that no meeting request had been received from any party until 4 pm.

Rahul Gandhi insisted on marching to the Election Commission premises accompanied by approximately 300 MPs, a demand the BJP described as completely unprecedented in Indian history. Additionally, the Opposition refused the ECI’s offer to have a senior official receive their memorandum directly at the protest site.

The BJP questioned the validity of the Opposition’s claim that 300 MPs participated, noting that Congress only has 129 MPs across both houses and that several major INDIA bloc parties were absent. The BJP also pointed out the notable absence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior lawyers.
