TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee pens poem “Girgit” targeting party rebels.

In the wake of a deepening internal crisis in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following its crushing defeat in the assembly polls, former chief minister Mamata Banerjee penned a sharply worded poem titled “Girgit (Chameleon)” which appeared to be hitting back at the party rebels.

The poem, which is written in Bengali and posted on her Facebook page, appears to be an indirect attack on the party dissenters who have either resigned from party posts or have publicly slammed the leadership after the defeat in the polls.

“More dangerous than a chameleon — at least a shape-shifter changes colour for its livelihood,” wrote Mamata, in the opening lines of the poem.

In the poem, Mamata accused such people of “changing colours and character within hours” and “selling the self-respect of people and workers” for personal gain, which clearly appeared to be a criticism of those who have questioned the party leadership amid the crisis.

In the concluding lines of the poem, the Trinamool supremo also cautioned the rebels, hinting that they would ultimately have to face the consequences of their actions.

“Just as the wheels of the chariot will move, so will your wheels move. You will get results. On that day, the traitors will understand what valueless inhumanity is all about,” the poem said.

Wave Of Resignations, Dissent Hit TMC

The poem was released on a day when internal unrest within the Trinamool Congress appeared to deepen further, with a series of resignations and open expressions of dissent emerging from within the party ranks.

KMC Borough XII chairman Sushanta Ghosh stepped down from his post, while party spokesperson and councillor Arup Chakraborty resigned from the KMC accounts committee.

In another development, Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar submitted yet another resignation letter to Trinamool state president Subrata Bakshi, giving up all organisational responsibilities while making it clear that she remained in the party. Former minister and singer Indranil Sen also announced his decision to withdraw from active electoral politics.

Several leaders have attributed the party’s recent electoral setbacks to what they describe as a growing “VVIP culture” within the organisation, alleging that grassroots workers have been increasingly sidelined and left unsupported after elections.

In her resignation letter, Dastidar referred to controversies surrounding the ration scam, recruitment irregularities and the RG Kar rape-and-murder case, saying these incidents had contributed to rising public anger and erosion of trust.

Mamata Banerjee had earlier acknowledged signs of discontent during her first meeting with newly elected legislators after the results, remarking that those unwilling to remain with the party were free to leave.

Against this backdrop, her latest poem is being viewed in political circles as a pointed message to internal dissenters, as the party navigates one of its most serious organisational challenges in recent years.
