The anecdote continues to attract attention because it involves two of the most influential political figures in Uttar Pradesh’s history.

Uttar Pradesh News: A political anecdote published in a book has revived discussion about one of the most talked-about rivalries in Uttar Pradesh politics, alleging that ballot boxes were replaced during the 1974 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election to defeat senior Congress leader Chandrabhanu Gupta.

The claim appears in senior journalist Shyamlal Yadav’s book, At the Heart of Power: The Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh. However, the allegation has not been confirmed by the Election Commission of India, any court or any official investigation. It should be treated as a recorded political anecdote rather than an established historical fact.

Two Congress Heavyweights At The Centre Of The Story

The anecdote revolves around two of Uttar Pradesh’s most influential political leaders: Chandrabhanu Gupta and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna.

Chandrabhanu Gupta served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh four times and remained a dominant figure in state politics for nearly two decades. Known for his organisational skills and political strategy, he later joined the Janata Party.

Hemwati Bahuguna, another prominent Congress leader with a strong support base, became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1973. He was regarded as a dynamic administrator and later went on to play an important role in national politics.

What Happened In The 1974 Election?

The 1974 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election was a crucial contest for the Congress Party. At the time, Hemwati Bahuguna was serving as Chief Minister, while Chandrabhanu Gupta contested from the Lucknow East Assembly constituency.

Gupta lost the election by a narrow margin, and at the time the defeat was viewed as a normal electoral outcome.

What The Book Claims

According to At the Heart of Power: The Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Bahuguna allegedly made a remarkable admission to Gupta during a meeting after the Emergency, when both leaders were members of the Janata Party.

The book claims Bahuguna told Gupta that several ballot boxes had been replaced in the Lucknow East constituency during the 1974 election, resulting in Gupta’s narrow defeat.

The allegation is presented as an anecdote recounted in the book and has not been independently verified.

Author Stands By His Account

The author, Shyamlal Yadav, has reiterated that he stands by what he wrote in the book when asked about the anecdote.

However, there is no official evidence or judicial finding supporting the allegation, and no record of the Election Commission confirming such an incident.

Why The Story Continues To Draw Attention

The anecdote continues to attract attention because it involves two of the most influential political figures in Uttar Pradesh’s history.

Historians and political observers have advised readers to view such accounts cautiously and compare them with available historical records, given the absence of official corroboration.

Political Rivals Who Later Became Colleagues

Despite their political rivalry within the Congress, Chandrabhanu Gupta and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna later found themselves in the Janata Party following the Emergency.

Their political journey reflects the dramatic realignments that reshaped Indian politics during the post-Emergency period, making the anecdote one of the most frequently discussed stories from Uttar Pradesh’s political history.
