West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said that legal action has been initiated against Aam Janata Unnayan Party MLA Humayun Kabir over his controversial remarks, as he introduced the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026 in the Assembly.

Addressing the House, Adhikari said that the government would not tolerate provocative statements and asserted that the rule of law would be strictly enforced in the state.

“Enough is enough. It is now time to teach people like Humayun Kabir a lesson,” Adhikari said.

Taking a sharp dig at the opposition, he added, “I am telling you clearly, Mamata Banerjee is no longer the Chief Minister. You got away with saying and doing whatever you wanted for so long because you had a weak Chief Minister. But that will no longer be tolerated.”

He further informed the Assembly that cases had been registered against Kabir at Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Adhikari also alleged that Kabir’s comments were politically motivated, claiming they were aimed at consolidating support in his constituency ahead of a bypoll.

“Humayun Kabir wants his son to contest and win the by-election from his former constituency of Rejinagar. It is with that political objective that he is making such provocative statements,” the Bengal CM alleged.

Kabir’s remarks that triggered row

The controversy started during a recent public meeting in Murshidabad’s Rejinagar, where Kabir reportedly made strong remarks targeting local BJP leaders and issued warnings over political dominance in the region.

In a video that has since gone viral, Kabir is heard criticising BJP leaders, including defeated candidate Anamika Ghosh, alleging that they were behaving as if they still held elected office. He also warned of a strong political response if he mobilised supporters in the region.

Kabir further issued a direct warning to Adhikari, saying the BJP should tone down its political “bluster” in Murshidabad. “I told Suvendu Adhikari the other day — you wanted to win the election, and your party did, that is fine. But tell your people to tone down the bluster in Murshidabad. The day I mobilise the Muslims and take to the field, I will strike back so hard that there won’t be anyone left to even carry your party flag,'” he is heard saying in the video.

Kabir denies allegations

Responding to the allegations, Kabir denied making any comments against the Chief Minister. He said he was not afraid of arrest and maintained that the government was free to take action if it deemed necessary.

“I have not said anything against the Chief Minister. If the government wants to arrest me, it can do so. I am not afraid,” Kabir told reporters.

On Adhikari’s remarks in the Assembly, Kabir declined to engage directly. “I will not say anything. The Chief Minister has the right to speak in the House, and whatever was said was said there. You can look at the statement given by the Chief Minister—I will not comment on that statement,” he said.
