A lawyer who entered politics through student activism: Born on May 31, 1964, in Nettoor near Kochi, Satheesan studied law and later practised in the Kerala High Court for nearly a decade before entering full-time politics.

His rise began in student and youth politics: Satheesan started out in the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and later worked with the Youth Congress and NSUI. He also served as chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union in the late 1980s.

He lost his first election before building a stronghold: His electoral debut came in 1996, when he lost from Paravur, then considered a Left stronghold. He returned to win the seat in 2001 and has held it ever since.

A six-time MLA from Paravur: Satheesan has represented Paravur in the Kerala Assembly continuously since 2001, winning six consecutive terms and emerging as one of Congress’ most prominent faces in Kerala politics.

He became the face of the Opposition after 2021: In 2021, Satheesan replaced Ramesh Chennithala as Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly. Over the last five years, he led the UDF’s attacks on the Left government on issues ranging from governance and corruption to law and order.
