Hegseth fires top Pentagon military planner as Trump weighs fresh Iran strikes: Report
He is the second general to be ousted from the post, known in military circles as the “J5”, under Hegseth

The Pentagon’s senior officer responsible for military strategy and planning has been removed from his post as the Trump administration weighs its next move in the war with Iran, adding to questions over leadership changes at the US Defence Department at a critical moment for regional security.Army Lt Gen Brett Sylvia’s departure was confirmed by a US defence official on Wednesday, reported Associated Press. Sylvia headed the strategy, plans and policy directorate, known within the military as the J5, which helps coordinate military planning with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the president. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter involved sensitive personnel issues, said no reason had been provided for Sylvia’s removal and no immediate successor had been identified. The timing is significant as President Donald Trump is reportedly considering whether to resume attacks on Iran after the November 3 US midterm elections. Washington has alerted regional partners to prepare for possible renewed military action and the risk of Iranian retaliation, according to two diplomats briefed on the warnings.Trump has not taken a final decision on further strikes. However, the warnings have prompted concerns among regional governments about attacks on energy installations and other critical infrastructure if hostilities intensify. The J5 plays a central role in translating military objectives into operational plans. The Pentagon recently sent the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and amphibious ships carrying Marines towards the Persian Gulf, a deployment involving about 9,000 troops. The additional forces could help expand US military options, although their presence does not establish whether or when Trump will authorise another attack.Although regional governments are said to be preparing for the possibility that a renewed US campaign could trigger retaliation extending beyond the initial period of American strikes. The diplomats said US officials had indicated that a fresh round of military action could last several days, while Iranian counterattacks and actions by allied groups could prolong the confrontation.Iran, meanwhile, has continued to signal an interest in negotiations. Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday that Tehran “continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed” and is working with mediators to review proposals it wants to use as a basis for restoring a ceasefire. Trump had previously rejected the proposal. The United Arab Emirates also urged the parties to avoid escalation, calling on them to “exercise wisdom and pursue political solutions to help contain tensions”.

Trump keeps military option open

Trump has alternated between suggesting the conflict could end soon and warning that further bombing remains possible. During a campaign appearance in Texas earlier this week, he said an end to the war could come “in a couple of weeks, if you don’t mind”. “Somebody asked me before, when will the war in Iran end?” Trump said. “I said, ‘Whenever I want it to end.’ It’ll be very quick, but we have to have it end properly, with total and complete — a total statement, they will never have a nuclear weapon.”The conflict has also created political and economic pressures for the administration ahead of the midterms. Higher gasoline prices have weighed on voters, while the Pentagon’s latest estimate puts the cost of the war to American taxpayers at $47.1 billion.Jonathan Schanzer, executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, warned that Tehran might not wait for Washington’s preferred timeline if it believed an attack was imminent. “Why would they wait until after the elections here … if they could initiate it and potentially gain the upper hand?” he said.

Senior officers exit under Hegseth

Sylvia’s removal adds to a succession of departures among senior military leaders during Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth’s tenure. He is the second general to leave the J5 director’s post under Hegseth. Lt Gen Joseph McGee, his predecessor, was forced to retire last October. Before joining the Joint Staff, Sylvia commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until May 2025. He had previously served as vice director of the J5.The Joint Staff offered no explanation for the change but acknowledged Sylvia’s service. “The Chairman, the Joint Staff, and the Joint Force extend our deepest gratitude to Lt Gen Brett Sylvia and his family for their 32 years of distinguished service to our nation,” a spokesperson said.Nearly two dozen generals, admirals and other military leaders have been fired, pressed to retire or otherwise departed under Hegseth, with the Pentagon publicly explaining few of the cases. The departures have included civilian leaders of the Army and Navy and senior uniformed officers across the services.Hegseth has also ordered a reduction in senior officer positions. Last month, he said the military should cut the number of top officers by 20% by January 1, 2027, doubling the planned reductions. The military has roughly 800 general and flag officer positions.“I call it accountability and long overdue,” Hegseth told junior officers and enlisted leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico on September 30.The cuts have drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who argue that removing experienced commanders could damage military leadership over the longer term.“He’s got some kind of like deep-seated grievance about leadership in the military,” Senator Mark Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot critical of Hegseth, said last month. “He’s purging a generation of great leaders of the military, and it’s going to take a generation to recover from it.”
