India’s apparel market is on course to add nearly $50 billion in four years, rising from $95.7 billion in 2025 to $146.3 billion by 2029, as rural India, smaller towns and a rapidly changing consumer base fuel the next phase of growth.

The market is projected to grow at a 9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2029, according to a new report by the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) and 1Lattice. The growth comes after the market expanded sharply from $49.3 billion in 2020 to $95.7 billion in 2025, an 18% CAGR over the period.

What stands out in the latest numbers is where much of this consumption is coming from. Rural India accounted for $55.9 billion, or nearly 58% of the country’s apparel market in 2025. Metro and Tier-1 markets together contributed just $14.2 billion, while Tier-2 markets accounted for $8.5 billion and Tier-3 and smaller markets for another $17.1 billion.

The numbers point to a significant shift in the centre of gravity of India’s apparel consumption, with rising aspirations in smaller towns and rural markets opening up a much larger opportunity for brands, manufacturers and retailers.

“The next phase of growth for India’s apparel industry will increasingly come from markets beyond the metros. Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are already contributing significantly to apparel consumption, while rising aspirations are creating demand for a wider choice of brands, formats and fashion,” said Santosh Katariya, president, CMAI.

At the same time, Indian consumers are becoming more casual, with comfort, versatility and functionality increasingly influencing what they buy. Casualwear accounted for 31% of the apparel market in 2025, ahead of ethnicwear at 27% and formalwear at 26%.

The shift is particularly visible in menswear, where demand for denims, T-shirts and athleisure is rising as consumers increasingly look for clothing that can work across office, leisure and social occasions. Quick-dry T-shirts, stretchable joggers and moisture-wicking polos are also gaining traction as fitness and active lifestyles influence apparel choices.

“One of the most significant shifts in India’s apparel consumption is the blurring of traditional category boundaries. Men’s wear is becoming more casual, comfortable and versatile, with consumers seeking styles that can transition seamlessly between work, leisure and social occasions,” said Rahul Mehta, chief mentor, CMAI.

Menswear remains the country’s largest apparel segment at $38.5 billion in 2025, followed by womenswear at $35.6 billion and kidswear at $21.6 billion. However, the growth trajectory is beginning to favour the latter two segments.

Kidswear is projected to grow at a 9.4% CAGR between 2025 and 2029, followed by womenswear at 8.9% and menswear at 8.5%. Kidswear is expected to reach about $34 billion by 2029, while womenswear could touch $55 billion.

Womenswear growth is being supported by increasing workforce participation, rising demand for athleisure and the growing popularity of Indo-Western styles. The report also flags growing consumer interest in sustainable and ethical fashion.

The rise of casualwear, however, is not displacing traditional clothing. Ethnicwear accounts for 27% of India’s overall apparel market and around 60% of womenswear, with sarees and salwar suits remaining among the largest categories. Weddings and other celebrations continue to support demand for sherwanis, bandhgalas and Indo-Western outfits in menswear.

Within menswear, formalwear remained the largest category at $17.1 billion in 2025, followed by casualwear at $15.5 billion. In womenswear, ethnicwear accounted for $21.2 billion, while kidswear casualwear stood at $9.4 billion, ahead of formalwear at $7 billion.

Despite the rapid growth of e-commerce, physical stores continue to dominate apparel buying in India. Offline retail accounted for 83% of apparel sales in 2025, worth an estimated $79.4 billion, while online sales stood at $16.3 billion, or 17% of the market.

Exclusive brand outlets accounted for around half of offline sales. Within online sales, marketplaces contributed about 80%, compared with 20% through D2C websites.

The data suggests that digital channels are increasingly influencing discovery and purchase without replacing the physical store, making an omnichannel presence critical for brands seeking to capture the next wave of growth.

The opportunity is also unlikely to be confined to premium consumers. A large part of the next phase of expansion is expected to come from first-time branded consumers, shoppers upgrading their purchases and consumers moving from unorganised to organised retail.

For the industry, that makes value-for-money positioning as important as premiumisation. Manufacturers will need greater flexibility and faster product cycles, while brands and retailers will have to sharpen consumer segmentation, regionalise assortments and expand their reach beyond the major urban centres.

India is already the world’s fourth-largest apparel market. The next leg of its growth, the report suggests, will be defined less by a single category and more by the sheer breadth of consumers entering, upgrading and changing the way they buy clothes.
