India’s organised luggage manufacturers are expected to record revenue growth of 5-7 per cent in the current fiscal, supported by premiumisation and a shift towards branded products. However, operating margins are projected to contract by 150-200 basis points amid rising raw-material costs and intense competition, according to Crisil Ratings.

The analysis covers manufacturers accounting for around three-fourths of the organised luggage industry, whose revenue stood at approximately Rs 8,200 crore last fiscal. The organised segment’s share of industry sales is expected to approach 50 per cent this fiscal, compared with less than 40 per cent in FY22, driven by wider retail distribution, greater compliance and consumer preference for established brands.

Volume growth is expected to remain subdued at 2-3 per cent in FY27 as travel demand moderated in the first half amid inflationary pressures, slower growth in travel activity and weak rural sentiment. A recovery during the festive and holiday season is unlikely to fully offset the first-half weakness. Revenue growth will therefore depend on a projected 3-4 per cent increase in realisations, supported by demand for premium and feature-rich products.

Raw-material inflation remains a key concern for manufacturers. Hard luggage accounts for 65-70 per cent of industry revenue, while crude-linked materials such as polycarbonate and polypropylene make up more than half of the cost base. Prices of these inputs rose 30-40% in the first half, according to Crisil, increasing pressure on manufacturers’ margins. Competitive discounting and higher spending on marketing, customer acquisition and product innovation could further constrain profitability.

Crisil Ratings said manufacturers with stronger brands, flexible sourcing, manufacturing scale and pricing power would be better positioned to absorb cost pressures. Most players are expected to maintain stable credit profiles, supported by manageable working-capital requirements. However, companies facing simultaneous margin and inventory pressures could experience weaker leverage and cash-flow generation.

Over the medium term, the shift towards organised retail, rising demand for branded luggage and a potential recovery in travel are expected to support industry growth. Raw-material prices, consumer demand and the pace of premiumisation will remain key factors influencing performance.
