A brief speech by Charu Chaudhary at a Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) gathering in Saharanpur has triggered fresh speculation over whether party chief Jayant Chaudhary is preparing to give his wife a larger political role ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
Charu spoke for around two minutes at the event, but her intervention quickly became one of its most discussed moments. Her remarks came amid a political war of words between Jayant and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, with Charu publicly backing her husband and speaking about her pride in being part of the Chaudhary family.
There is no official confirmation from Jayant or the RLD that Charu will contest the 2027 election. However, her increasing presence at political programmes and her decision to respond publicly during a politically charged exchange have revived questions over whether she is being gradually brought into a more visible role.
The Saharanpur event came against the backdrop of a widening political gap between Jayant and Akhilesh. The two were once allies, but the RLD is now part of the BJP-led NDA, while the Samajwadi Party is working to consolidate its organisation and social base ahead of the next Assembly polls.
The latest exchange followed Akhilesh’s use of the word “chavanni”, a reference to the old 25-paise coin. In political language, the term can imply diminished relevance. Jayant interpreted the remark as an attack on his political standing and accused Akhilesh of repeatedly making personal comments.
Charu’s decision to speak out therefore carried significance beyond the family setting of the rally.
She has largely remained away from electoral politics and has not held an official organisational position in the RLD. Professionally associated with fashion design, she has generally stayed outside the centre of Jayant’s political activities.
That has made her recent appearances more notable.
Charu has accompanied Jayant at several political programmes in recent years. Her address at an event in Baghpat in 2024 also drew attention after visuals showed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath applauding her speech.
Speculation about her possible political entry has surfaced before, including suggestions that she could eventually be considered for a seat in western Uttar Pradesh. The Saharanpur appearance has brought that discussion back into focus.
Political analyst Shashikant Pandey, head of the Department of Political Science at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, said, “Charu Chaudhary’s intervention combines family symbolism with political messaging. While it does not confirm an electoral plan, her growing visibility suggests that the RLD may be exploring ways to present another member of the Chaudhary family as a public political figure.”
The speculation also draws strength from the RLD’s close identification with the Chaudhary family.
Jayant is the grandson of former Prime Minister and farmer leader Chaudhary Charan Singh and the son of former Union minister Ajit Singh. That political legacy continues to hold influence in western Uttar Pradesh, where Jat voters remain important to the RLD’s support base.
Bringing Charu into a formal political role could give the party another recognisable family face while also helping it broaden its outreach beyond its traditional agrarian and Jat constituency.
Her public profile could potentially help the RLD connect more directly with women and younger voters as the party seeks to strengthen its position within the NDA.
For now, however, there is no indication that a candidature has been finalised.
