India have suffered a major setback ahead of their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ruled out due to injury.

Bumrah had been included in the squad for the series, but his selection was subject to fitness as he continued his recovery from a knee injury. However, the fast bowler has now failed to regain full fitness in time, forcing him to miss both Tests against Sri Lanka.

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to a knee injury, impacting the team’s World Test Championship campaign which begins August 15.

The development comes as a surprise, especially after recent reports suggested that Bumrah had received clearance to return for the series. Instead, India’s premier pacer will remain on the sidelines, dealing another blow to the team’s pace attack.

Bumrah has not played for India since the second ODI against England. He missed the final ODI at Lord’s after sustaining an impact injury while fielding in the previous match. At the time, the BCCI confirmed that the pacer had picked up the injury during the second ODI, and he has not returned to competitive cricket since.

Big Challenge Awaits India

India begin their Test campaign against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium on August 15, with the second and final Test scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23.

The series carries added significance for the Shubman Gill-led side, who are fighting to keep their hopes alive in the World Test Championship race. India reportedly need to win six of their remaining nine Tests to stay in contention for a place in the WTC final, making every match crucial.

Bumrah’s absence leaves a significant gap in India’s bowling attack, particularly in Sri Lankan conditions where experience and control with the new ball can make a huge difference.

The visitors will now have to rely on the rest of their pace unit to shoulder the responsibility as they aim to begin the series on a positive note. Winning in Sri Lanka has rarely been straightforward, and without their most experienced fast bowler, India face an even tougher task in their bid to strengthen their WTC campaign.
