Why Is Jatayu Earth’s Center Nature Park Associated With The Ramayana? What Can Visitors See At Jatayu Earth’s Center?Where Is Jatayu Earth’s Center Located?

Jatayu Earth’s Center Nature Park: The battle between Jatayu and Ravana is among the significant episodes in the epic Ramayana, particularly for the role the mythical bird plays in attempting to stop Sita’s abduction. With the episode drawing attention following its depiction in Namit Malhotra and Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, interest has also turned towards a tourism destination in Kerala associated with the legend. Jatayu Earth’s Center Nature Park, situated at Chadayamangalam in Kollam district, is home to a massive sculpture depicting the mythological bird.

Jatayu Earth s Center Story Behind Giant Jatayu Sculpture

The film, which features Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, brings the episode back into public discussion. According to the Ramayana, Jatayu encounters Ravana while he is carrying Sita away to Lanka in the Pushpaka Vimana. The mythical bird attempts to stop the abduction and engages Ravana in a fierce battle. However, Ravana eventually overpowers him and severs his wings, leaving him severely wounded. Rama and Lakshmana later come across the dying Jatayu, who informs them about Sita’s abduction and the direction in which Ravana has taken her.

This episode plays an important role in the larger narrative, as Jatayu’s intervention provides Rama with crucial information about Sita’s whereabouts. His attempt to stop Ravana, despite being at a disadvantage, is also an important part of the epic’s portrayal of the bird’s character.

Why Is Jatayu Earth’s Center Nature Park Associated With The Ramayana?

Located on a rocky hill at Chadayamangalam, Jatayu Earth’s Center is associated with the traditional belief that the location is where Jatayu fell after his confrontation with Ravana. According to the local legend, the bird landed on the hill after Ravana severed his wings during the battle while taking Sita to Lanka.

This association forms the mythological basis of the tourism project. However, the connection between the hill and the events described in the Ramayana belongs to the realm of religious tradition and local belief rather than established historical evidence. The location’s association with Jatayu should therefore be understood in that context.

The park’s most recognisable feature is its enormous Jatayu sculpture, designed and created by sculptor and filmmaker Rajiv Anchal. Measuring approximately 200 feet in length, 150 feet in width and 70 feet in height, the structure depicts the mythological bird in a fallen position. Built using concrete and steel, the sculpture covers an area of around 15,000 square feet.

What Can Visitors See At Jatayu Earth’s Center?

Jatayu Earth’s Center is spread across approximately 65 acres and combines a mythology-themed attraction with adventure and cultural activities. The giant sculpture is its central attraction, while the complex also houses a museum and a multi-dimensional theatre.

The theatre presents an animated depiction of the battle between Jatayu and Ravana, offering visitors an interpretation of the episode from the Ramayana. The museum and cultural spaces provide additional context through exhibitions and presentations related to the legend and traditional art forms.

Visitors can reach the hilltop either by taking a cable car or by climbing the steps leading to the sculpture. The cable car provides an alternative to the uphill walk, while the steps offer access for those who prefer to make the climb on foot. The park also has an adventure zone, which forms another part of the visitor experience.

Where Is Jatayu Earth’s Center Located?

Jatayu Earth’s Center is situated at Chadayamangalam in Kollam district, approximately 38 km from Kollam city. It is also accessible from Thiruvananthapuram, with the location around 46 km from the state capital.

The project was developed as a public-private partnership tourism initiative in Kerala. Its first phase, which included the adventure zone, opened in December 2017, while the larger project became accessible to visitors in 2018.

With the Jatayu episode receiving renewed attention through Ramayana, the Kerala destination has come into focus again, with audiences curious about the story behind its giant Jatayu sculpture and its association with the epic. Although the association between Chadayamangalam and Jatayu is rooted in local belief rather than verified historical events, Jatayu Earth’s Center offers a tourism destination where the epic’s narrative has been interpreted through sculpture, exhibitions and an animated presentation.
