JNU dismissed Akoijam from his teaching position on October 9 following an internal inquiry, while Delhi Police registered an FIR in connection with the allegations on October 11.

Among those present at the demonstration were Delhi BJP Vice President and SC/ST Morcha in-charge Ranjit Singh, BJP leader Ashok Thakur, Scheduled Tribe Morcha State President C. L. Meena, ST Morcha Co-in-charge Sundar Singh Chaudhary, and other party office-bearers and workers.
The BJP’s Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) Morcha on Monday staged a protest outside the Congress office over sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, accusing the party of double standards on women’s safety and demanding accountability from its leadership.
The protest, led by Delhi BJP State General Secretary Yogita Singh, comes amid allegations by 11 female students against Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha. JNU dismissed him from his teaching position on October 9 following an internal inquiry, while Delhi Police registered an FIR in connection with the allegations on October 11.
Addressing the protesters, Yogita Singh accused the Congress of failing to uphold its stated commitment to women’s dignity and rights. She questioned the party’s response to the allegations against a sitting MP, arguing that it should clarify its position rather than remain silent on the matter.
Singh also referred to the complaints filed by the 11 students and the university’s internal inquiry, asking why the Congress leadership had not addressed the issue with the same seriousness it expected from other political parties.
C. L. Meena said university campuses must provide female students with a safe environment to pursue their education. He called on the Congress to clarify its position on the allegations and explain what action it intended to take.
Ranjit Singh and Sundar Singh Chaudhary also demanded a public response from the Congress, maintaining that political leaders should be held accountable for allegations concerning women’s safety and dignity.
BJP Steps Up Protests Over JNU Sexual Harassment Allegations
Monday’s demonstration is the latest in a series of protests and representations by the BJP over the allegations against Akoijam.
On October 12, the BJP Mahila Morcha staged a protest outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi under the banner of the Nari Shakti Hunkar Andolan. Led by its national president, Roop Kumari Choudhary, the demonstration was also attended by BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj and other women leaders.
The protesters demanded Akoijam’s expulsion from the Congress and questioned the response of senior party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
On October 13, a delegation of BJP women MPs met President Droupadi Murmu and sought her intervention, demanding Akoijam’s suspension from the Lok Sabha. The delegation argued that the allegations warranted accountability beyond the university’s disciplinary proceedings.
The BJP Mahila Morcha also approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) on October 14. The delegation met NCW chairperson Vijaya Kishori Rahatkar and sought intervention in the matter.
Delhi Police Probe Underway
Separately, Delhi Police registered an FIR on October 11 following a complaint by JNU’s Chief Security Officer. The FIR concerns allegations of sexual harassment, sexually coloured remarks and acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty.
Akoijam appeared before investigators on October 15. He described the case as politically motivated and said he would cooperate with the investigation.
The police investigation is separate from the university’s internal disciplinary proceedings, which resulted in his dismissal from his teaching position on October 9.
What Lies Ahead?
The BJP has continued to target the Congress over its handling of the allegations, demanding action against Akoijam and a public explanation from the party leadership.
The Congress’s response, the ongoing police investigation and the consequences of the university’s internal inquiry are likely to remain central to the controversy.
The allegations against Akoijam remain subject to the ongoing legal process, and the police investigation will determine the next course of action.
