Lionel Messi’s farewell match was an emotional one, as both the fans and the player himself put a lot of effort into the final game of his career.
Thousands of fans filled the large stadium in Buenos Aires to see Messi in his last match wearing the Argentina jersey, where the whole stadium was decorated in the country’s colors. Blue and white signs and banners were everywhere, with a giant No. 10 shirt signed on the back reading “Gracias”.
Lionel Messi played his final match for Argentina in Buenos Aires, scoring a penalty and assisting two goals in his last international game, celebrated by thousands of fans at the stadium.
Messi arrived to the stadium with his three sons, Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro, and was overwhelmed with emotion by the singing of the Argentine national anthem, almost crying in his son’s arms.

As soon as the match had started, Messi was back to his old self, scoring and creating chances left and right. He immediately got into the game, testing Benin’s goalkeeper, who had to save his first challenge in the seventh minute.
The fans chanted and cheered for every move their beloved captain did on the pitch.
Following a scoreless first half, Messi immediately started playing as a creator, delivering a dangerous cross that led to Argentina’s opening goal. He then set up another goal, this time with a low cross, allowing Nico Paz to score beautifully.
But the whole stadium was waiting for something more significant from the fantastic Lionel Messi, and it came in the 69th minute when Argentina was fouled inside the penalty box.
Messi took the spot-kick, scoring the ball high in the top-right corner, finishing his international career in style and right there was greeted and celebrated by his teammates.
He tried to score one final goal to wrap up the match with a lasting memory, but he was unsuccessful.
One final chance came as he shot low, but it was saved, and with little over ten minutes left, he tried a free kick, but it missed the target. There would be no last-minute set-piece masterpiece.
It was quite a memorable night for Messi, not because he scored two goals and one assist, but more because it was his farewell to the fans who supported him throughout his playing career.
He played with the same determination and passion, showing the world that even at the age of 39, he is still one of the best footballers the world has ever seen. More importantly, he had a night to remember, sharing the final chapter of his playing career with the people who made it all possible, turning from a young unknown to the most lethal striker in the history of Argentine football.
As soon as the final whistle had blown, Messi stood on the field, taking in the atmosphere of the moment.
For almost two decades, Argentina has witnessed Messi’s journey, seeing him lifting the highest trophies in world football, crying with him after devastating losses and celebrating the victories along with everyone else.
