An Alabama women’s healthcare clinic has expanded into a larger health centre with support from a $5 million grant from Melinda French Gates’ philanthropic organisation, Pivotal. WAWC Healthcare in Tuscaloosa previously provided abortion services before Alabama’s abortion ban became enforceable following the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade. The clinic later reopened with a broader healthcare mission, offering services including pregnancy care, midwifery support and mental health care. Its expansion illustrates how WAWC developed its healthcare model amid changes to abortion access in Alabama, while pursuing its longer-term aim of providing comprehensive services to women and families.

Pivotal’s grant supported WAWC Healthcare’s reopening and expansion in Tuscaloosa. The clinic developed a broader healthcare model that includes pregnancy care, midwifery services and mental health support. French Gates visited the facility to learn about its services, including its mental health programme. The funding forms part of her wider focus on improving women’s healthcare and supporting organisations that address gaps in access to care. The West Alabama Women’s Center provided abortion services before the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Alabama’s existing abortion ban subsequently became enforceable. The clinic closed following the change and later reopened with a broader healthcare focus. WAWC Executive Director Robin Marty has also described the organisation’s longer-term intention to become a full-spectrum healthcare centre, showing that its expansion was not solely a response to the abortion ban.

The new facility is four times the size of the former clinic

WAWC Healthcare’s new facility in Tuscaloosa opened on April 25, 2026, according to Alabama Reflector. The publication reported that the new location is four times the size of the clinic’s former footprint at Jack Warner Parkway. The larger facility provides space for expanded healthcare services and the organisation’s mental health wing. Local reporting also described the new centre as having twice as many examination rooms as the previous location.

WAWC Healthcare expands maternal and reproductive services

The clinic’s healthcare services include pregnancy verification, prenatal care, miscarriage management and contraception. Its official website also lists STI and HIV testing and treatment, PrEP and annual examinations. WAWC offers contraception on a sliding scale and states that it does not provide elective abortions. These services reflect the organisation’s broader approach to reproductive and general healthcare.Mental health support is a key part of WAWC’s expanded services. Fortune reported that French Gates visited the facility to learn about its mental health programmes, including care related to postpartum depression. Local reporting has highlighted the work of counsellor Tamela Hughes-Lawson, whose services support women during pregnancy and after childbirth. The mental health programme forms part of the centre’s wider approach to addressing women’s healthcare needs.

The clinic’s growth comes amid Alabama’s healthcare challenges

WAWC’s expansion comes as Alabama continues to face healthcare challenges affecting women and families. Alabama Reflector reported that the clinic previously saw approximately 250 patients per month, most of whom sought abortions. The organisation continued to see substantial demand for healthcare after abortion services were no longer available. Its expansion reflects an effort to provide broader care through maternal healthcare, contraception and mental health services.

Melinda French Gates’ wider commitment to women’s health

The Alabama clinic is part of Melinda French Gates’ wider work in women’s healthcare. In June 2026, Pivotal announced a $215 million commitment focused on reproductive health, midlife and menopause, and mental health. The initiative aims to address gaps in women’s healthcare through philanthropic funding and partnerships. WAWC’s expansion provides a local example of the type of healthcare access and service development highlighted in French Gates’ broader philanthropic work.
