Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shined in his much anticipated Duleep Trophy debut but contributed two wickets as East Zone drew closer to a convincing victory over North East Zone.
The 15-year-old came in as the vice-captain with Ishan Kishan, but could only manage 8 runs from 6 balls. Sooryavanshi had hit 2 fours while facing the first over bowered by pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam, but a thick edge at the non-strike stood out as he was out on the last ball of the second over.
15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took two wickets on his Duleep Trophy debut as East Zone neared a convincing win against North East Zone, whose first innings score of 111 followed East Zone’s 467 built on centuries by Sudip Kumar Gharami (146) and Shahbaz Ahmed (167).
The young sensation made amends with two wickets in the very next over that North East had to face as the chasing team collapsed for the second time in the match. Sooryavanshi’s left-arm spin accounted for Kishan Lyngdoh (25) and Imliwati Lemtur (4) as East Zone were on course for a comfortable 200 odd run win.
The BCCI further reported that Vaibhav has picked up 2 wickets and 2 catches in Duleep Trophy.
East Zone in Total Control After Huge Innings By Gharami And Shahbaz
East Zone were in total control after Sudip Kumar Gharami and Shahbaz Ahmed hammered huge hundreds. Gharami scored 146 while his partner Shahbaz contributed 167 as East Zone posted a mammoth 467 in their first innings.
North East could manage only 111 in their first innings as East Zone enforced the follow-on.

North East were reeling at 90/8 in their second innings as Sooryavanshi removed 2 more wickets in the very next over he bowled. It was another poor over for North East as the tail added merely 6 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in the 25th over.
Jersey Number Draws Attention
Another curious observation was that Vaibhav had to walk back to the pavilion with the score on 8. It appeared that some part of his jersey number was taped as only the 3 was visible. There is no official explanation yet as to why the number was taped.
However, 3 is Vaibhav’s lucky number and he wears the same for his Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. It is possible that the Duleep Trophy kit had a printing defect and the number 3 had to be taped so that it can corrected before the next match.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s first Duleep Trophy knock may not have been as thrilling as his T20I debut but he did make an impression with the ball as East Zone drew closer to a quarter final win.
