Priscilla Chan’s fund has provided $330,000 to support Kauaʻi’s schools as the new academic year gets underway, with all 23 public and charter schools receiving a share of the funding. The unrestricted grants give school leaders flexibility to direct the money towards their most pressing needs. As reported by Hawaii News Now, the support also extends to Kumu’s Cupboard, a Līhuʻe nonprofit that provides free classroom supplies to teachers. The latest funding continues the Chan Zuckerberg Kauaʻi Community Fund’s support for the island, established in 2019. Separately, Chan and Mark Zuckerberg have also backed a free back-to-school event that distributed more than 3,000 supply-filled backpacks to local students.

The latest grants cover Kauaʻi’s full public and charter school network, including 16 public schools and seven public charter schools. Rather than being tied to a particular classroom project or a narrowly defined expense, the funding is unrestricted.That gives individual school leaders room to decide how the money should be used. Needs can differ from one school to another, and flexible funding allows those decisions to be made locally rather than according to a single island-wide spending plan.Kauaʻi Complex Area Superintendent Leila Maeda-Kobayashi said, “Unrestricted or flexible grants empower our school leaders to direct resources exactly where they are needed most.”For schools preparing for a new academic year, that flexibility can matter. Expenses are not always the same from one campus to the next, and unrestricted support can be directed towards practical requirements as they arise.

Priscilla Chan’s fund helps Kumu’s Cupboard provide free school supplies

The funding is not limited to schools themselves. Kumu’s Cupboard, based in Līhuʻe, is also among the recipients. The nonprofit provides classroom supplies free of charge to teachers and other educational staff throughout the year. Its role is separate from the individual schools, but its work is closely connected to the day-to-day costs educators can face when putting together lessons and classroom activities.Including the organisation in the grant distribution broadens the reach of the funding beyond school campuses. It also means teachers can access supplies through a community organisation rather than relying solely on resources allocated to their schools.

Chan Zuckerberg Kauaʻi fund continues its community support for schools

The Chan Zuckerberg Kauai Community Fund was established in 2019 as a way of supporting community needs on the island. The fund operates through the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, which administers the latest grants.The new distribution comes at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, when schools, families and educators are again dealing with the costs associated with returning to class. Hawaiʻi Community Foundation Program Director Marissa Sandblom said, “By addressing resource disparities and financial pressures facing students, families, and educators, we can help remove barriers and cultivate the necessary conditions for meaningful engagement in learning.”The decision to provide unrestricted grants is significant in practical terms because schools can determine where the money is most useful rather than receiving funding that can only be spent on a predetermined programme.

Priscilla Chan’s fund extends Kauaʻi school support through free supplies

The fund’s support has also extended into a community back-to-school event. Reportedly, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg joined other local donors in sponsoring Kukui Grove’s Back to School Bash. The event is described by organisers as Kauaʻi’s largest free school supply giveaway. More than 3,000 backpacks, each filled with school supplies, were distributed to K-12 students. That initiative provides a more direct form of assistance for families. While the school grants are managed at an institutional level, the giveaway puts supplies directly into the hands of students preparing to return to classrooms.Taken together, the two forms of support cover different parts of the school community. The grants give schools and an education-focused nonprofit greater control over resources, while the giveaway helps students with some of the basic supplies needed for the new school year.
