The BJP has brought back senior leader and long-time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue Ram Madhav to its core organisation, appointing him a national vice-president in party president Nitin Nabin’s new team.

Madhav’s return comes six years after he stepped away from the BJP’s top organisational posts. His re-induction stands out alongside the continuation of several leaders with RSS links, as the BJP prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections and the longer run-up to 2029.

From RSS Pracharak To BJP Strategist

Madhav began his political career as an RSS pracharak in 1981. He later served as the organisation’s national spokesperson for more than a decade, roughly from 2003 to 2014, and held senior responsibilities including all-India co-prachar pramukh.

After the BJP’s 2014 Lok Sabha victory, the RSS deputed him to the party. He served as BJP national general secretary from 2014 to 2020 during Amit Shah’s tenure as party president.

He became an important link between the RSS and BJP and played a central role in expanding the party in the Northeast.

Madhav was also involved in the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election and the BJP-PDP coalition government with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He handled sensitive political issues involving J&K, the Northeast and alliance management.

Why Nabin Has Brought Him Back

Madhav has been appointed one of 13 national vice-presidents. His return is being seen as an effort to strengthen RSS-BJP coordination and bring strategic and alliance-management experience back into the BJP’s core team.

It also gives Nabin’s younger leadership structure a seasoned figure with experience in coalition building, crisis management and complex political negotiations.

Unlike Smriti Irani, who has been given a specific state charge in Uttar Pradesh, Madhav does not have a publicly assigned state portfolio. His role is expected to be that of a senior strategist, particularly on sensitive regions and alliance-related issues.

Madhav’s Work In Northeast

Madhav was one of the key architects of the BJP’s expansion in the Northeast between 2014 and 2020.

The party built governments in Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and later Meghalaya, often through alliances with regional parties.

The BJP also developed a model that sought to accommodate regional demands on statehood, autonomy and cultural protections while maintaining alignment with the Centre on security and development.

By 2026, however, the challenge has shifted from expansion to consolidation.

Several regional partners face unresolved demands, including those linked to Gorkha statehood, Kamtapur and Rajbongshi aspirations and tribal autonomy. Ethnic tensions, sporadic violence and cross-border issues involving Myanmar and Bangladesh also complicate the political picture.

Madhav’s experience in building and managing alliances could therefore be important as the BJP tries to prevent further erosion of support.

J&K Political Challenge

Madhav also has deep experience in Jammu and Kashmir. He was a key negotiator in the 2014 BJP-PDP alliance and an important BJP strategist on the region.

The political landscape has changed significantly since then.

J&K has an elected Assembly and government restored in 2024, but remains a Union Territory. Regional parties continue to demand restoration of statehood and special status, while the BJP presents the removal of Article 370 as a step towards integration and development.

Violence has fallen sharply compared with the pre-2019 period, but concerns remain over political space and unresolved grievances.

The BJP remains strong in Jammu, weaker in the Valley and is seeking to expand in Ladakh. Issues such as statehood, jobs and demographic concerns can affect its electoral position.

Madhav’s experience could help the national leadership balance the BJP’s development and integration message with political accommodation.

The common thread in Madhav’s return is the BJP’s need to manage rather than simply expand.

Both the Northeast and J&K involve sensitive questions of identity, autonomy, security and alliances. Madhav’s RSS background and BJP experience give him credibility across both organisational and political networks.

Ram Madhav’s return to the BJP as a national vice-president is part of a broader organisational reshuffle aimed at strengthening the party’s leadership and communication strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He has previously played a key role in the party’s outreach in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir.

Ram Madhav’s return to the BJP core team is expected to strengthen the party’s strategy in Jammu and Kashmir by bringing back his experience in handling sensitive political issues and alliance management in the region.

Ram Madhav’s return to the BJP’s core team as a national vice-president could strengthen the party’s Northeast alliances because he previously played a central role in expanding the party in the region and was a key architect of its expansion there between 2014 and 2020, often through alliances with regional parties.
