New Delhi: Sabyasachi Mukherjee, founder and creative director of the eponymous label, said the luxury lifestyle brand is planning to enter new categories such as fragrances and footwear besides small leather goods and expanding eyewear into a much larger segment. “The ambition has always been to build India’s first global luxury lifestyle brand. I think the business is beginning to demonstrate the breadth required to do that,” he added. The brand clocked revenues of ₹650 crore in the financial year 2026.

“Our first fragrance should arrive in the next 18 months and small leather goods such as wallets will help us tap into a much broader ecosystem. The Middle East is a growing market for us. We will continue to grow Eastwards and Westwards,” said Mukherjee

The evolution of the business is what is particularly encouraging, Mukherjee said. “Jewellery is now 33% of the turnover at around ₹200 crore. Accessories will cross ₹100 crore this year,” he said.

“Categories such as leather accessories and international ready-to-wear are becoming increasingly important,” he added.

Mukherjee said the growth is not simply about becoming bigger; it is about becoming a more complete luxury house.

“We are building categories that allow customers to engage with Sabyasachi more frequently, while maintaining the same standards of quality, craftsmanship and integrity that define our couture and jewellery,” he added.

The brand is also building international ready-to-wear, and the idea is to create global luxury from a ‘Calcutta’ point of view, said Mukherjee. Some of it will be produced within the brand’s own ecosystem, while for certain products it will work with the ‘finest’ factories and ateliers around the world, he said. “The point is not to imitate global luxury, but to participate in it with a very distinct Indian perspective,” he added.

He said he has never believed in entering a category simply because there is a commercial opportunity.

“A category needs to feel culturally and aesthetically authentic. Eyewear, for example, has been part of the Sabyasachi language almost from the beginning. We began that journey as a collaboration with Morgenthal Frederics. Now, on our own, we are building eyewear into a much larger category for the House,” said Mukherjee.

“We are also aggressively building small leather goods, which I believe will become an important business, particularly for gifting. After fragrance, women’s and men’s footwear will eventually follow,” he added.

Mukherjee said over the last year, the brand has transitioned into new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Calcutta, Kolkata’s old name. “Our investment continues to go into building capacity, strengthening product development and, most importantly, protecting and expanding the artisanal ecosystem that makes the brand possible,” he added.

The brand has retail operations in six cities: Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and New York City.

“We have been using exhibitions and partnerships with some of the world’s best retailers to understand markets before making permanent commitments. I don’t believe stores should ever become vanity projects.”
