The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports suspended the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) due to governance concerns, directing the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad hoc committee to manage the sport until a properly elected body is established.

It directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an ad hoc committee to manage the sport until a new and properly elected governing body is in place.

Why Has the Sports Ministry Suspended TTFI?

According to the ministry, the action to suspend is linked to governance deficiencies within the federation. One of the key concerns highlighted was the failure of the TTFI to conduct its elections within the said time.

The ministry stated that despite being given an opportunity to explain its position through a show-cause notice, the federation failed to provide a satisfactory response. As a result, the government decided to withdraw its recognition until proper governance is restored.

IOA Asked to Form an Ad Hoc Committee

Following the suspension, the ministry has instructed the Indian Olympic Association to take immediate steps to ensure that the administration of table tennis continues without disruption.

The IOA has been asked to work in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to establish an interim regulatory mechanism.

This includes the formation of an ad hoc committee that will oversee the functioning of the federation until a democratically elected governing body assumes charge.

What Will the Ad Hoc Committee Do?

The proposed committee will be responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of Indian table tennis during the transition period.

Its key responsibilities are expected to include:

  • Ensuring smooth administration of the sport.
  • Coordinating with players, coaches and state associations.
  • Overseeing national competitions and selection processes.
  • Working towards conducting fresh elections to restore a regular governing body.

The arrangement is intended to prevent disruption to athletes preparing for domestic and international tournaments.
