'We have lost the man,' Ilaiyaraaja struggles for words after Bharathiraja's demise

Bharathiraja’s association with Ilaiyaraaja is not confined to cinema; their relationship dates back several years. They were best friends, innovators, and partners, and their journey from obscurity paved the way for their legend in Tamil cinema. However, their brilliant history came to an end following the death of Bharathiraja on June 10, 2026. The multi-talented director who produced over 40 films and was known as “Iyakkunar Imayam,” made invaluable contributions to Tamil cinema.

Ilaiyaraaja’s heartfelt tribute

Ilaiyaraaja paid his respects to Bharathiraja at his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai. The legendary composer appeared visibly emotional as he stood before the mortal remains of his longtime friend. Speaking briefly to media present at the funeral, he said, “There is nothing to say. We have lost the man. This is not a place for interviews. I pray for his soul to rest in peace.” His straightforward yet meaningful words expressed the sadness of saying goodbye to someone who had been with him for many years.

From small-town dreamers to Tamil Cinema legends

The association of Bharathiraja and Ilaiyaraaja started long before both became famous in the film world. Bharathiraja knew Ilaiyaraaja and his brothers in Pannaipuram. They shared a great interest in the arts and storytelling, which led to their friendship. They used to perform dramas, musical plays, and cultural shows while dreaming of success in films. Their saga is perhaps one of the most fascinating in Tamil cinema.

Bharathiraja-Ilaiyaraaja combo churned out timeless classics

One of the most productive collaborations ever commenced when Ilaiyaraaja wrote music for Bharathiraja’s first film ‘16 Vayathinile’. They churned out several fantastic films like ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’, ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, ‘Puthiya Vaarpugal’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’, ‘Mudhal Mariyadhai,’ and ‘Kadalora Kavithaigal’. Both were instrumental in making their films and music legendary for future generations of cineastes. Even after they went their separate ways later on, their admiration for one another never ceased. Ilaiyaraaja’s sympathies following his recent separation from Bharathiraja speak volumes.
