Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday took a swipe at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, saying he prayed that “God gives him wisdom” and claiming the Congress leader often “does the opposite of what is required.”

Speaking to News18 India’s Jyoti Kamal at the News18 India Diamond States Summit, Yadav criticised Gandhi over his remarks on students and said the Congress leader “does not seem to know what he is saying.”

“I only pray to God that He gives wisdom to the Leader of the Opposition in the world’s largest democracy. It is unfortunate. Whenever he acts, he seems to do the opposite of what is required. He himself does not seem to know what he is doing or whose interests he is serving,” Yadav said.

Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in Parliament on students, the chief minister said, “You yourself mentioned those words, not I. Those were his own words.”

Yadav also took a dig at Gandhi over the Bihar Assembly election campaign, saying the Congress leader travelled to Europe during the polls and later blamed others after the party’s defeat.

“He doesn’t seem to realise what he is saying. Elections are taking place in Bihar, and he goes off to Europe. Then when he loses the election, he blames someone else,” Yadav said.

In another barb, Yadav claimed the BJP’s electoral success was, in part, due to Gandhi’s leadership of the Congress.

“I have always believed—and many of my friends in the Congress used to say—that if today around 80 per cent of the states are being governed by the BJP and the NDA, much of the credit goes to Rahul Gandhi,” he said, adding, “May God keep him doing his work in the Congress.”
