DMK Vs Congress: A political slugfest broke out between the Congress and the DMK after Tamil Nadu leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin blamed the Congress for the BJP’s continued electoral success in past elections.
Congress leader Manickam Tagore on Sunday said that the Congress had always stood by the DMK during difficult times and termed Udhayanidhi’s comments “unacceptable.”
Tagore claimed the Congress’s decision to break from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and form a coalition with superstar actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which was the single-largest party in the recently held elections, was meant to stop the BJP from getting a foothold in the southern state.
Tagore said that the BJP was attempting to create a political understanding between the DMK and the AIADMK, which, he said, went against the Congress party’s core principles.
“Congress had stood with DMK in difficult times. We had waited outside when they had a minority; his words are unacceptable. Congress has always stood with the secular alliance. BJP was making the connecting call for DMK and AIADMK, which is against our principles. Any understanding with the BJP will not be tolerated by Congress,” he said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Thirunavukkarasar said that the DMK is a part of the Congress alliance, so in that sense, the DMK is also responsible for the BJP’s victory.
He urged that the DMK and Congress must proceed with their respective alliances and work for the welfare of the people.
“They are also part and parcel of the Congress alliance so far, so DMK is also responsible for the victory of PM Modi. My suggestion to the DMK friends is that we proceed in our own ways now that we are in different alliances. Let us work for the welfare of the people of the state instead of criticising through harsh words,” he said.

Tagore’s remarks came after Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, saying the BJP’s repeated electoral victories were due more to Congress than to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
During a DMK Youth Wing organisers’ meeting held at the Chennai Anna Institute of Arts and Science, Udhayanidhi Stalin said he had once believed PM Modi and Amit Shah were solely responsible for the BJP’s continued success, but had now come to the conclusion that Congress was the real reason behind the party’s victories.
“I used to think that Modi and Amit Shah were the reason for BJP’s continuous victories; now it turns out that Congress is the reason for that,” he said.
The DMK leader also criticised Congress sharply, saying the party “should never be trusted at any time” and “shouldn’t even be approached.”
Congress severed ties with DMK after the elections and agreed to extend conditional backing to TVK. In the 2026 assembly elections, DMK only secured 59 seats, and Congress won 5.
