Indian equity markets extended their losing streak on Wednesday, September 9, as rising oil prices and other concerns weighed on investor sentiment.

The NSE Nifty 50 ended the session at 23,431.50, declining 203.60 points, or 0.86%. The BSE Sensex closed at 74,764.23, down 813.35 points, or 1.08%.

The sell-off also extended to the broader markets. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.51%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.41%.

The India VIX, which measures market volatility, settled 6.98% higher at 12.02.

Among sectors, the Nifty IT index led the losses, declining more than 3%. In contrast, the Nifty Metal index gained around 2%.

Technical View

From a technical point of view, 23,550–23,600 now remains the immediate resistance zone. A sustained move above 23,600 would be required to improve and trigger a recovery towards 23,700–23,800. On the downside, the 23,400 zone now acts as the immediate support area, said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

Momentum indicators continue to reflect significant weakness. The daily RSI stands around 26, firmly in the oversold zone, indicating strong negative momentum. The MACD remains bearish, with the MACD line at around -159, well below the signal line near -83, while the histogram remains negative at around -77. This confirms that selling pressure continues to dominate, although the deeply oversold RSI leaves room for a technical rebound or short-covering bounce from lower levels.
