AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said he did not join the INDIA bloc’s protest march to the Election Commission in Delhi because his party is not part of the alliance, while calling for changes to the process of selecting the Chief Election Commissioner.

Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, Owaisi said, “I did not go there because I am not a part of that (alliance). Begani shaadi mein mera kya kaam?”

The AIMIM chief, however, said he had his own concerns about the Election Commission and the appointment process for the CEC.

The INDIA bloc march in Delhi was aimed at pressing its demands over the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police detained around 260 protesters, including 10 MPs, after stopping the march.

Owaisi Wants CJI On CEC Panel

Owaisi called the existing process for selecting the CEC as the “biggest problem”, saying it gives too much influence to the executive.

Under the 2023 law, the selection committee consists of the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Union Cabinet minister nominated by the Prime Minister.

Owaisi called for the law to be changed so that the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition jointly select the CEC.

“The process for the selection of Chief Election Commissioner, which is wrong. It is completely in favour of the executive…The process needs to be changed,” he said, adding that the present system needed to be corrected.

‘SIR Is NRC Through Backdoor’

Owaisi also renewed his criticism of the SIR exercise, saying he had raised concerns about it during the process in Bihar.

“This SIR is wrong. I believe that SIR is an NRC through the backdoor,” he said.

His comments came as opposition parties stepped up their campaign against the Election Commission and CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

Rahul, Priyanka Detained

The INDIA bloc protest in Delhi ended after a prolonged standoff with police. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition leaders staged a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan after police stopped them from marching towards the EC office.

Delhi Police later detained the protesters, saying the march had not been granted permission and that restrictions were in place in the area.

The opposition has been protesting over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and has demanded action over its concerns regarding the SIR exercise.

Asaduddin Owaisi stated that he did not join the INDIA bloc’s protest march to the Election Commission because his party is not part of the opposition alliance, famously remarking, “Begani shaadi mein mera kya kaam?”

Owaisi criticized the current 2023 law for giving too much influence to the executive and called for the selection panel to be modified so that the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition jointly select the CEC.

Owaisi strongly criticized the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, warning that the SIR exercise functions as an “NRC through the backdoor” and will force citizens to stand in line to produce documents again.
