Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday appeared to respond to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal’s “Who is Nitin Nabin?” remark by sharing journalist Piyush Padmakar’s post recounting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief’s humble beginnings and student life in Delhi.

Sharing the post on X, Modi wrote, “This simplicity and straightforwardness is a matter of pride for every BJP worker,” while reposting Padmakar’s thread on Nitin Nabin’s formative years.

The thread narrates how Nitin Nabin, despite being the son of a Bihar MLA, never sought special treatment while studying in Delhi in the late 1990s. Padmakar, who says he shared a room with Nabin after Class 12, recalled that the two would split a ₹20 thali to save money, travel by DTC buses instead of taking auto-rickshaws and taxis, and carefully budget every rupee during their college days.

According to the post, Nabin and his friends initially hoped to rent an apartment in Delhi’s IP Extension but abandoned the idea after realising it was beyond their means. Padmakar recalled that when a property dealer learnt Nabin’s father was an MLA from Bihar, he began showing them expensive flats, only for Nabin to decline, saying their monthly budget of ₹2,000 had to cover rent, food and college expenses.

The thread further says Nabin and his friends eventually rented a modest house in West Vinod Nagar’s Mandawali locality, where they shared household chores, prepared breakfast, washed utensils, swept and mopped the house before travelling to college by bus. Padmakar described Nabin as the most disciplined member of the group and said he often resolved disagreements among his friends.

PM Modi’s post came a day after Kejriwal took a swipe at Nabin by asking, “Aap kaun hain (Who are you)?”

Kejriwal’s remark was in response to Nabin’s address at the BJP’s Shakti Kendra Sanyojak Sammelan in Lucknow, where the BJP leader criticised Opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Kejriwal over what he described as their silence on alleged insults to Hindu deities.

The exchange has since triggered a fresh political sparring between the BJP and the AAP.
