Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday hailed his party’s strong performance in the Punjab civic polls, saying the “ED party has been wiped out” as voters backed the ruling party in urban local body elections.

In a post on X, Kejriwal thanked voters for what he called a “spectacular victory” and said the mandate reflected support for the Bhagwant Mann government.

“Congratulations to everyone. By casting this historic vote, the people have applauded the work of the Bhagwant Mann government. We will continue to do good work in the same way in the future,” the former Delhi CM wrote.

Taking a swipe at the BJP, Kejriwal said the “ED party” had been “wiped out” by voters and accused it of harassing small traders in Punjab through repeated raids.

“The ED party, which harassed people by conducting so many raids on small traders in Punjab, has today been avenged by the people,” he added.

AAP Leads Civic Poll Results

According to data from the Punjab State Election Commission, AAP won 886 of the 1,977 wards where results were declared till Friday evening.

The Congress followed with 358 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secured 178 wards and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 153 wards. Independent candidates also performed strongly, winning 246 wards, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) secured six.

Counting began at 8 am amid tight security arrangements, with results still pending in more than 130 wards at the time of reporting. Elections were held across 102 municipal bodies, with voter turnout recorded at 63.94 per cent.

Boost For AAP Ahead Of Assembly Polls

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the results reflected public support for the government’s development agenda and a rejection of “politics of hatred”. He said voters had endorsed AAP’s governance record since coming to power in 2022.

AAP performed strongly in several key areas, including Dhuri, the chief minister’s home constituency, where the party won 19 of 21 wards. It also delivered a strong showing in Gidderbaha, while mixed results were seen in Chamkaur Sahib.

The civic polls were widely seen as an early test ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with all major parties — AAP, Congress, BJP and SAD — aiming to gauge their urban support base.
