Mumbai Indians have returned to an old acquaintance in their coaching set up as former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been appointed as head coach for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL). Pollard, who was the batting coach of Mumbai Indians, will now be in-charge as the five-time champions look to bolster their position in the competition.
Pollard joins another illustrious list of people who have had a connection with Mumbai Indians. The former all-rounder was a part of the Mumbai Indians set up for 13 years as a player before transitioning into the role of a batting coach with the franchise.
Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, previously MI’s batting coach, is appointed head coach for the upcoming IPL season, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene to help revive the franchise’s performance.

From Mumbai Indians Star to Head Coach
Pollard is considered one of the best players to have graced the jersey of Mumbai Indians in their history. He amassed 3,915 runs for the franchise, placing him third in the list of Mumbai Indians’ top run-scorers. Additionally, he was a part of all the Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaigns during his playing career.
It will be interesting to see if his rich experience as a player and an understanding of the franchise’s ethos helps him in his new role as the head coach.
Speaking about his new role, Pollard expressed his gratitude towards Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for bestowing him with the responsibility. The former West Indies all-rounder also revealed he looks forward to building on the legacy of Mumbai Indians, developing their young talents, and bringing more joy to the fans.
Mumbai Indians Look for Revival After Recent Struggles
The appointment of Pollard has come at a crucial juncture for Mumbai Indians as they seek to rebuild after a succession of underwhelming campaigns in recent years. Since Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians for the 2024 season and took over as the captain, Mumbai have struggled to make an impact in the league. They have made the playoffs just once in the last three seasons, finishing as the runners-up in the 2023 season.
For a franchise that has had such a rich history in the IPL, finishing as a semi-finalist has been a major disappointment, which has prompted them to look for a change in their coaching setup.
Mumbai Indians will be hoping that Pollard’s vast experience of playing with some of the most talented players in Mumbai Indians’ history will help them get back to their winning ways in the shortest format.
Mahela Jayawardene’s Coaching Chapter Ends
Pollard’s appointment also marks the end of Mahela Jayawardene’s chapter as the head coach of Mumbai Indians. During his tenure, Jayawardene has led Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles, cementing his place in the annals of the franchise’s history.
Replacing a highly successful coach such as Mahela Jayawardene will be a daunting task for any individual, and Pollard will be aware of the size of the challenge that lies ahead.
Can Pollard Lead Mumbai Indians Back to the Top?
Mumbai Indians will be looking to Pollard to steer the franchise back to the summit of the IPL. While his understanding of the team could enable him to identify their key needs, it will be by overcoming the test of application on the park that will decide if Mumbai Indians can rediscover their former magic.
